Cello, featuring Barry Phillips
This cd features traditional and contemporary cello solos, duets and trios from Europe, Asia and North America to create an expansive soundscape spanning centuries, continents and instrumentation -- from 1300 to 2000. Cellist Barry Phillips received his M.M. from the San Francisco Conservatory of Music, and is a teacher of folk and classical music. He has worked on several film scores, and has compositions have been performed by several Bay Area orchestras. His cello playing is expressive, and has a rich dark tone. But the attention of the listener will be drawn to the music on the cd, and not to the performers.
The cd runs for nearly 56 minutes and has 15 tracks:
| 1. Braigh Loch Iall 2. Aoibhneas Eilis Ni Cheallaigh 3. Lochaber No More 4. Old Heddon of Fawsley 5. O Ho the Pretty Chain 6. Gycklarpolskan av Peter Erson 7. Cantiga de Santa Maria #206 8. Trotto |
9. Caoineadh an Spailpin 10. I Love to See the Wheels in Motion 11. Shto Mi E Milo 12. Ladom Se, Goro Zalade 13. Polska efter Pelle Fors 14. Thugamar Fein an Samhradh Linn 15. Inis Oirr |
The tunes come from many countries, but especially from Ireland and Scotland. Phillips has arranged them for cello, zither, pipes and a variety of other instruments, many of which he plays himself.
Cello is produced by Gourd Music, ©2000. Barry Phillips has made several other cd's for Gourd, including "Simple Gifts," "Tree of Life," (Shaker Tunes) and "The World Turned Upside Down," a collection of folk and early classical music from Colonial America.
If you are looking for some good celtic tunes (and "world" music) featuring the cello, you won't find a nicer cd than this one. I recommend it highly. Cello may be purchased at Amazon.Com. or your local music store.
