How do I tune during a run through?
Last night during a dress rehearsal, during the frantic finale which goes on for pages and pages, my C peg loosened a little, without my knowledge I might add, until it became apparant, and I went way flat. What do I do in the future when this happens again, crank the peg and cross my fingers? Of course in this Sondheim musical, I am playing booming waltz 9/8 whole notes on the C string, so I was in trouble. Any suggestions? I ended up playing F where G is, but the low Cs were woefully out of tune. I had no time to stop

Play the octave higher C til you have the chance to tune.

he he he, I've had the happen. I've usually just played everything in position -- or should I say out of position. Fortunately strings usually go flat so you can just slide up to that note you're looking for. Good thing is most people have so much hearing loss from loud music and lawn mowers they have no idea you are out of tune.
