Straight Leg Cello-Holding
I posted my query on CBN, but
thought maybe CC'ers might have some ideas, so here goes:
I'm
having my left ACL reconstructed in a couple weeks. Am assuming
it'll be a while before my left knee will bend enough for
cello-holding. Anybody ever have to deal with this, playing your
cello while your left knee remains straight? How did you do it? Am
thinking a pile 'o pillows, but haven't gotten much beyond that. Any
suggestions, advice, anecdotes, etc., appreciated!
TIA,
MaryK

pillows
are the answer
But another chair is useful too, or
even a couple of extra chairs (it makes playing in orchestra
somewhat difficult).
Two years ago a horse's left hind hoof
took a violent dislike to my left knee (same knee!). Anyway, I
couldn't bend it for awhile.
I got two extra chairs next to
each other and laid my leg on them (on a nice sheepskin for padding)
and had my right leg as normal. This meant that my cello rested on
my left thigh and I had to hold it firm with my right
leg.
You will I think have to sit at the back of the your
chair (I hope it's a straight-backed chair) because having the leg
up interferes with balance/gravity, so you'll need the
support.
I suggest you try this out before the operation. .
.otherwise ask somebody with a lot of patience to help set it up!!!
I wouldn't recomend practicing in this position for too long - cuts
off circulation!!
Good luck

straight leg
I saw a cellist play that way a long
time ago - it was a concert of the Pittsburg Symphony and the
principal cellist kept one leg straight while he played. He didn't
use any pillows or extra chairs or anything.
