Rossini
for cello and bass
Hi, I need some help finding a
piece I heard about by Rossini for solo cello and double bass with
orchestra. The conductor of our ameteur orchestra (Symphonia de
Pons, France) saw this on a concert programme. He's a big Rossini
fan but didn't know the piece. Neither do I. Could this be a special
arrangement rather than an original orchestration? If you know
what Im talking about, I would be grateful for more information:
publisher etc. degree of difficulty of solo parts grade-wise, as
we'd be keen to play the piece if its suitable.
With thanks
for any help, Helen

Re:

I wonder if your conductor friend is
mixed up. There is a Rossini Duo for cello and bass. There's piece
for violin, bass, & orchestra by some Italian bassist on a
Rossini theme. Otherwise it must be some arrangement he saw.

Re:
Duetto
Gary Karr has a recording of it on
his CD Music for Violoncello and Doublebass. The one I really like
though, is Duo by Dragonetti. That is so
beautiful!

Rossini
Duetto
I have played this piece several
times now and have a lot of fun every time. This is truly a
delightful little piece of chamber music and I highly recommend it
to any cellist and bassist. It is also quite a crowd-pleaser when
played well.

Re:
Duetto
One of my funnest symphonic
experiences was playing the last movement of the Rossini Duetto with
Karr when he performed the Dragonetti and Koussevitsky concertos
with us in Mexico. what a character, and what character. I suppose
he has done this with just about every orchestra he's played
with...always invites the principals to get into the act.

I took a class from him when I was
in college (just a one-day thing). He's the best. Very funny, very
nice, and made even a poor player like me feel good about what I was
doing. Not at all a music "snob".
