Mischa
Maisky
Just found out that he's coming to
the city where I live. The program says he'll play Bach suites 1,3
and 5 if I remember correctly. WHY hasn't anyone told me? Now it's
almost certain that there are no more tickets...

Bach suites (used) for $5 and I want my money back; they sound
positively spastic! (well, to each his own) Anyone interested in
buying them????

Yes, I would like to buy them but I
live in Germany. Can you find out how much the shipping would
cost?

Re:
Mischa Maisky
I accidentally tuned into a PBS TV
broadcast of Maisky's performance of the Dvorak Concerto. I was
transfixed. WHish I had known in advance and recorded it. I thought
it was fantastic. Unfortunately there is no audio recording of him
playing this concerto. Then the very next I heard his recording of
Tchaikowsy's Rococo Variations on FM radion, while in the car and
was equally moved.
I sure wish I could find a copy of that
Dvorak broadcast.
I have read unfavorable reviews of his Bach
recording.

Maisky
& Argerich
I heard part of a Maisky/Argerich
performance the other day. Not sure what it was, just that I enjoyed
it. What have they recorded together? And who else has either Maisky
or Argerich recorded with?

Re:
Maisky & Argerich
Argerich is one of the finest
pianists there is...period. She also has a remarkable history of
cancellations. She and Maisky have recorded several things
together, including the Bach Gamba Sonatas, the Debussy Sonate,
Arpeggione Sonata, the Schumann Folk Pieces and Fantasy Pieces,
maybe some others. Both of them have many, many
recordings.

I trust this does not replace the
Rose/Hambro as the "definitive" Arpeggione?
I own no Martha
recordings at all. How is this possible?

IMHO, no one will ever be able to
replace the Rose/Hambro "Arpeggione". Without question, this is one
of the most beautiful cello records ever made. Plans are under way
for a Stucka-engineered reissue on Biddulph when copyright
expires.

Re:

I concur. While Hambro is no
Argerich, Maisky's no Rose. Those early Columbias Rose did will
always be among the greatest cello recordings ever made. To truly
appreciate Argerich's unique artistry you should get some of her
solo recordings.

More
Argerich
She has also recorded the
Tchaikovsky and Shostakovich piano trios, with a little help from
her Latvian pals Mischa Maisky and Gidon Kremer. This is a new CD,
recorded live in Japan and it is quite unbelievable. You'll never go
back to any other after this.

I also agree. Maisky's a fine
cellist, but he's no Leonard Rose. On the other hand, there have
probably been very few pianists that have what Argerich has. She's
spectacular.

So help me out here. I know musical
tastes are individual, but you guys have never steered me wrong.
(Well, "Elektra" was a little out of my realm...) Martha has quite a
list of CD's out there. A particular favorite I should
investigate???

Her debut recording, on DG, is
unbelievable (now part of "The Originals" series). Includes the
Chopin C# minor Scherzo, Prokofiev Toccata, Ravel Jeux d'eau. There
is a later recital on EMI; all sorts of things. White-hot
Tchaikovsky & Rachmaninoff concerti on a Phillips disc. She's
truly a force of nature.

Re:
Maisky & Argerich
It surprises me that nobody even
mentioned Argerich's recording of the Chopin Sonata, Polonaise
Brilliante, and Schumann Adagio& Allegro with Rostropovich
issued on DG LP. The reissue CD only has the Sonata and the
Polonaise Brilliante, but it does have some more Chopin played by
Richter.
As for Maisky, I've heard several of his recordings
and heard him live. He definitely sounds better live. I've been a
bit disappointed with his recordings of Prokofiev and his Bach (in
which he had the best viola sound I've ever heard).
But you
gotta love his swashbuckling costumes! (can you cay....Y - M - C -
A! ??? )

Aaaah, the good old days. Rose told
my dad, sans braggadoccio (merely a reaction to hearing from Starker
on the street in a chance meeting that his Kodaly recording took 11
hours or so), that he recorded the Arpeggione last mov't in one
take. A true masterpiece which I can't wait to own on CD.

Rose/Hambro Arpegionne
Does anyone know if the Rose/Hambro
Arpegionne is still available? Has it been reissued by Sony? Or is
it an historic recording on some other
label?
Thanks,

Gary.....Rose/Hambro
Gary,
Do you plan to clean up
all the pops and clicks with Diamond Cut or some other restoration
software? That's what I'm gonna do. I feel I must preserve my
Rose/Hambro recordings in a more permanent way. The Old LP and tapes
won't last much longer I fear. Plus, it will be great to hear it
cleaned up and on a CD. I'll let you know if I'm successful.

Maisky's Bach recording...
I first heard it this summer when I
was overseas, and I was astonished with the sound quality! I think
that it is probably the best sound and quality for a solo cello
recording that I have ever heard. And his Montaganna (sp?) sounds
awesome! I don't really like his Bach to much. I think he over
exaggerates on many things (sorry no specifics, but I don't have the
recording anymore to refer to). I think it its more Maisky than
Bach. Nevertheless, I think his playing on the recording is great,
allthough I would play it much differently. I have a video recording
somewhere of him and Gideon Kremer playing the Brahms Double, and
it's pretty good. Maisky starts off the cadenza with an up bow....
Enough rambling from me... gotta go study now that I back in
school... ~Frank~
