Korngold concerto (once more...)-recordings???
Hi! All these posts about the
Korngold cello concerto a while back got me quite curious about
it-any of you familiar with any recording?I've searched Amazon, and
all I could find was a recording with Peter Dixon and the BBC
Philharmonic Orchestra, but with references to recordings with
Francisco Gabarro and Charles Gerhardt on RCA. .At my local music
shop,they won't order anything unless I promise to buy it,and that's
a thing I just won't do,don't wanna get stuck with a terrible
recording...(its' not that it's wasting a lot of money, just one of
my stupid principles). Thanx in advance!

You have struck (Korn)gold with both
recordings. The Gabarro/Gerhardt is the first commercial recording,
dating from the early 70's, of the concerto, which was premiered in
1946. The original lp record was a compilation of excerpts from
Korngold's film music, with the title excerpt being "Elizabeth and
Essex". The concerto is found under the excerpt, "Deception", the
title of the film from which the work comes. It is an excellent
recording of the concerto. Gabarro, a student of Casals, was the
young principal cellist of the National Philharmonic, an English
studio orchestra.
The Peter Dixon/Matthias Bamert/BBC
recording is also very good, although the recorded sound is a bit
boomier and the cello less closely miked than the Gabarro. Dixon
is/was the Principal Cellist of the BBC. This recording features
entirely different repetoire, being part of the BBC series of the
complete concert works of Korngold.
In my opinion, both
recordings are excellent, and represent different looks at the
concerto as well as the two different sides of Korngold the
composer. Buy both while they are available. There is a third
recording, done as part of the complete concert works of Korngold by
the North German Radio Symphony, featuring Julius Berger as soloist,
but it is a much inferior performance, in my opinion.

Ryan (or anyone else for that
matter), Would you be interested in a signed (by Korngold)
photocopy of the score of the concerto (it's not exactly an
orchestra score, and not exactly a piano reduction...kind of a
combination), plus a typed letter signed by Korngold talking about
Heifetz going to play his violin concerto? It's rather expensive,
so if you (or anyone) is interested, please email me. David
