Who's
your favorite Cellist?
As a sort of side comment off Ewan
B's question ("what is your favorite cello piece") i'm wondering
which cello performers our your favorites. I'm not sure who's my
favorite- probably Rostopovich and Jackie Du Pre tied for first, and
then Yo Yo Ma in second. Who's your favorite? Steven

My
Favorite Cellist
this is going to sound strange, as i
know they're not "professional" cellists in the classical sense; but
i love the women from rasputina... they have such a lovely mystique
and i like the idea that they play all original material. with a
rock edge, no less!

interesting, i've never heard of the
women of rasputina- do they have any recordings out or are they more
folky in their music style? Steven

My favorite would have to be Yo-Yo
Ma. He is phenomenal! I know there are many other great cellists out
there. He puts in so much emotion. I can connect with him quite
easily! ~Mel

I wish I could've seen Jacqueline
du Pre play in person. That would've been awesome, there isn't a
word for how cool it would've been. After her, my favorite cellist
is Rostropovich. Has anybody ever noticed how humongous his hands
are? Not that this makes him a better cellist, I'm just pointing it
out. They're huge! They must come in handy. After that, I would say
Yo-Yo Ma. Honestly, I don't like a lot of his interpretations but
he's got an incredible sound. (Especially live, I saw him play the
Elgar this year and it was incredible!)I also love how he's recorded
such a variety of different types of music.

Greatness?
I don't really have a favorite
cellist, having not heard many, but I would like to say something
about how I think we should measure greatness. I think that
greatness comes through hard work, not genius. Let's take composers,
for example. While Mozart gave the world a ton of beautiful music, I
don't have the highest respect for him because he was a genius
(correct me if I'm wrong). But I have not heard or read anything
that said Bach was a genius, or prodigy, whatever. He just loved
music a lot. He may have had a lot of talent, but.... Anyways, I
think the same can apply to cellists. While I don't dislike Yo-Yo
Ma, with how relatively young he looks, he must have either had some
incredible talent or some mean, selfish parents who pushed, and
pushed and pushed him. Most likely it was a little of both. That's
my opinion, and I certainly don't dislike any of the "prodigies"
I've mentioned. Bye!

I agree.

(by the way. my favourite composer is Chopin. I
just find so much emotion in all of his works that I've heard and
played thus far in life. )

Emotion?
I'm sorry, but i must disagree. keep
in mind that I only own one Ma recording, which would be "Solo" but
from what is on there, a great deal more emotion and interpretation
could've been added to the music. Take for instance the Kodaly
Sonata. dry. he doesn't capture the sadness and down-hearted spirit
that I think could've been used for emotional purposes for the
listener to connect with. The Cellist of Sarajevo is a little
better, but not what I would have done (assuming that i can play the
music, of course.) That piece is a Lament. it is sad, depressed,
(angst as well? it depends on your imterpretation) and he seems to
play it very technically.
Oh well, just my
opinion.

Boy you
like to bash Yo-Yo
I'm truely very surprised that only
one person says he likes Yo-Yo ma the most. i truely am. where i
live, he is the man. everybody likes him. and truthfully, i think i
haven't seen any cello soloist who has as many recordings as Ma.
also, i think we must realize that soloists are like everyone else-
even the great Ma or Du Pre. Some of their interpretations are
horrible and i'm sure some of them simply dislike certain songs. i
know i don't like to play some songs, and needless to say, it makes
it sound not so good.
As a side note, i'd like to comliment
Yo-Yo Ma on his ability to stay down to earth and not consider
himself above other people. Even though he's one of the best
cellists in the world (perhaps even THE best). I was in a master
class with him, and i don't think he could've been nicer. whenever
anybody messed up, he'd just say "thats okay, you sound great. you
really do." and he would never self-promote. i think he's one of
those rare musicians who is just a nice guy.

I think
you're right
I'm probably not qualified to judge,
but I kind of agree with Aaron (I didn't want to say it before,
because I don't have a whole lot of confidence in my opinion on such
things). When you put Yo-Yo Ma next to say... Jaqueline du Pre, he
looks a little pale. I'm not saying he's not a great cellist,
because he is. I think it's great how he's gotten the cello out a
bit. I mean, EVERYBODY knows who Yo-Yo Ma is. He definitely has
great technical ability and I agree with Mellocello about his
personality--he seems like an all-around nice guy. I think it would
be so interesting to read an interview with him--I'd like to see
what his thoughts are about cello (hint to Tim Janof!)

I don't
disagree with you.
And my intent was not to bash Ma, I
was just simply stating my opinion. (gosh I knew that someone would
be offended!) He is the only cello soloist that I have any
recordings of, and I love that CD, even though "Seven Tunes Heard In
China" just makes me want to hurl something at the CD player, and
only because I've heard it so often. I have to go to sleep to music
(part of the wonderful world of having Tinnitus) and I used to fall
asleep to "Solo", and since "Seven Tunes" is near the beginning, I'm
so tired of it now!
but anyways. I've only been playing
Cello for almost 10 months, so of course I am not the expert on such
matters, however, i have been playing piano for over 10 years, and I
always try to put the most emotion into a piece that i can (even if
i DO hate it. ) And
surprisingly, from what I have heard of Starker playing the Kodaly
Sonata, (I haven't heard it all the way through) I like Ma's better.
(mainly because Starker plays it so slow.)
I'm sure that
Yo-Yo Ma is a wonderful person. I wouldn't doubt it a bit. He looks
very friendly in all of his pictures that I've seen, and I think
that he has even played songs for recordings by request of other
people. ("Cellist of Sarajevo", for instance).
Yes, I do
think that Yo-Yo Ma is a wonderul and extremely talented musician, I
just think that he could add a little more interpretation to his
seemingly technical approach on things.
Aaron
(by the
way, I know exactly what you mean about some musicians having highly
over-inflated egos about themselves. but I think that it is kind of
strange, but wonderful at the same time that cellists are some of
the nicest musicians I've met, or at least most everyone on these
boards are. I've asked several very stupid questions in the past
here, and no one treated me like I was inferior because of my lack
of knowledge. and a couple times whenever I gave my opinion, but
said that I was only a beginner, so i could be totally wrong,
someone replied to me that I shouldn't feel inferior, because I'm
not. I'm just not as experienced, and that's no reason to feel
inferior to others. I love the people here! )

because my told me who she was when she noticed that i move a lot
and i love to gliss. I also like Alban Gerhardt. He's kind-of
lesser known, but he has a tremendous amount of soul. i saw him a
few months ago at Powell Hall.( i'm from St louis) he's really
nice too. i have e-mailed him a few times and he e-mails me

Re: my

First of all, it's all about
Jackie!! She's sooooo emotional!! Then, perhaps Rostropovich. But
has anyone mentioned Casals?? His Dvorak is to die!! And as for
Yo-Yo...well, as for Yo-Yo, I think he is a horrible, disgusting
role model. That he would do that crossover s--- absolutely turns my
stomach. That he could be doing important work for the cello field
and DOESN'T is awful. He's so talented- I truly respect that- but he
really does not make an effort to promote important music. I can't
even find words for how mad it makes me!!! YUCK!!! As for his
playing of the normal repetoire, I listened to a recording of his
Haydn C Major the other day consecuticvely with that of Rostropovich
and Jacqueline du Pre. I was amazed at how much I disliked his. It's
so CLEAN! Perhaps for some, that's nice to listen to, but I prefer
playing that's heart-on-your-sleeve and...not the opposite of
Jacqueline du Pre!! Has anyone heard of Joel Krosnick? He's the
cellist of the Juilliard String Quartet, and I LOVE his playing!
He's recorded a lot of the cello/piano sonata literature with
Gilbert Kalish, a GREAT pianist. Their Beethoven sonatas are above
and beyond anyone else's...if you haven't heard them, try to!! I
think amazon.com has clips of them...

Yo-Yo
Ma
Yo-Yo Ma probably finished the
entire cello rep years and years ago. I think it's great that he can
find more music and never stops enjoying it. After all, music isn't
ALL about pleasing your audience. I think all the other s--- as you
say that he plays in fact promotes cello even further. It shows that
you can go anywhere you want with the instrument. And as for
important music, I think anything that involves cello is important.
He's not my favorite cellist, but I have nothing but respect for his
playing everything he can handle.

I'm
with you Karen!!
As I've already said, I don't
particular love Ma's playing style, but I can still respect him as a
wonderful and talented musician. I think you went a little too far
with your criticism. Plus, the fact that you used any type of
profanity, censored or otherwise, immediately puts me on the
defensive. Such language is uncalled for. Period. No
exceptions.

(Gee, whatever happened to
everything being said in sweet earnest, Corrina? And I was afraid of
geting in trouble for what I said. ~sigh~)
