help!!!
cello in distress!!!
ok, i've just moved far far away
from my cello teacher and music store and everything familiar, and
when i took my cello out of the case today to practice (it's been
about a week...), i noticed the bridge is TIPPED towards the
pegboard, about 20 degrees or so!!!! Help!!! I'm so afraid to touch
it, for fear it'll collapse and crack the cello...
is there a
recommended way to realign it??? should i loosen the strings at the
pegboard and gently try to tip it back up from the top???? and how
dangerous is this?? ack!!!
any suggestions/cautions would be
much much appreciated.

Re:

Dear S,
Don't stress too much
- it happens frequently.
To straighten the bridge, place
each hand on either side of the bridge near the top, as close to the
top as possible. Firmly set the cello on the floor and between your
legs and using your thumb and maybe two fingers, push it back to the
upright, 90-degree position slowly but firmly. Don't jerk or tap it
in any way. You will probably want to loosen the strings since this
is your first time doing it, and if you do, loosen them enough so
you can remove the string from the string guide and place some
pencil lead in there to lubricate it (strings catching on the bridge
in the string guides is probably why it is bending in the first
place). When you tighten the strings back up, you might have to give
it another push toward the tailpiece because it may pull forward a
bit again.
Remember ALWAYS to put pencil lead on the string
guides whenever you switch strings to prevent pulling of the
bridge.
If you don't feel comfortable with the procedure,
feel free to email me and I'll walk you through it again in more
detail, but it's really easy.
