Competition for the worst 1st Instrument
Alright, everyone... The title
says it all. We always hear about the long-lost Strad that someone's
Grandfather bought for $25 at a garage sale for you to start on.
Now, lets hear the truth. The winner gets my condolances. To give an
example...here's a description of my first instrument from the 6th
Grade; many years ago.
Loaned to me by the middle
school Fiberglass body back panel starting to seperate from
the the body...steady vibration no matter what the note. I
temporarily fixed it by duct taping it together. Strings so old,
I was carbon dating the rosin buildup from the last student to
borrow it. Afraid to clean the rosin off since that was the only
thing holding the strings together. Bow so worn, there was a gap
between the hairs, giving it a "double strand"
look. Cordura/Nylon case with a broken zipper Plastic
Pegs And to top it all off, I actually CARRIED the thing to and
from school, which was slightly under a mile. Thank God, I only had
to do that three times a week, over level ground on good
roads. Once I got into the 7th Grade, I went up to a Student
Glasael from the school. Trust me, after the Plasticello (as I
called it), that Glasael sounded like a concert-quality instrument. As stange
as it seems, I wouldn't mind having that miserable excuse of an
instrument, if only to show my friends that it REALLY does
exist. I look forward to hearing from y'all, Daryl

Daryl, you may have won this
'contest' by default! My first cello (a rental I had for a very
short amount of time) was a Glaesel most likely similar to the one
you moved up to! Maybe a more pitiful cello exists (poor thing) but
you seem to have taken the cake! Interesting post; it makes me feel
very fortunate to have the cello that I do and she is more than my
humble efforts deserve at times

Howdy, Right now, my current
instrument is a Reiser. It's not a great quality instrument, but
she's (yes, it's female) still a better instrument than I am a
musician. Actually, the Reiser's sound quality surprised me. It's
got a nice, full tone, very forgiving sound, and a nice coloration.
The only thing I'm going to change on her is the bow. It's a crappy
fiberglass bow. That, and I think I'll try Helicore instead of
Dominants for my next string purchase. Thanks for the
feedback. Daryl
