Spiccato Bow
Anyone out there in cello-playing
land have one/tried one?? Any comments you'd care to share? I think
I'm beginning the bow-shopping process. Shopping.
Ugh.
TIA, MaryK

Re:
Spiccato Bow
Hi MaryK- hope you're recovering
well!!
I've tried one, and when put side by side next to the
Arcus, Berg and even Coda Classic, did not like it as well as any of
them. It felt a bit clunky. Of course, you can adjust them, which I
didn't take the time to do because I really wasn't impressed enough
to bother.
It was pretty though.
: )
Just my
opinion! I'm sure there are folks who love them.

Re:
Spiccato Bow
I tried both stiff and "soft"
Spiccato cello bows back in June. They seemed very much like a Coda,
to me. I had the stiff bow at home for a while and was able to
adjust it to find the "setting" that seemed best for my 'style.' The
folks at Ifshin, who loaned me the Spiccato bow (and had sold me the
Coda mack in January) said that there were cellists who thought the
Spiccato bow a better bow.
Given the price difference, I felt
the Coda gave more for the money, but the Spiccato might have had a
slight edge, but not one I am likely to need to take advantage of.
It might be a little more "robust" whatever I mean by that. I had
been quite pleased with a Coda Conservatory two years ago, but did
not buy any bow at that time.
For the kind of cello playing I
do, I still enjoy playing with an Arcus Concerto bow. I find I can
play more expressivley and enjoy the range of dynamics (I can always
be loud, but it's easier to be soft with an Arcus.) Although when
someone else, familiar with a more conventionally balanced bow, uses
my cello equipment, they seem to prefer to use the Coda. But even
Bernd (of Arcus) says it takes some time to learn to use an
Arcus.
If you are rich, at the $3,000 level there are some
very fine modern pernambuco bows. I find that for the way I play, I
get about as much from a Coda (for that kind of bow), except for the
most rare examples of bowmaking art.

Re:
Spiccato Bow
$3K is about $1K too rich for my
budget right now, unfortunately. I plan to give the Spiccato and
Coda a try, and will probably just start lugging my cello from
dealer to dealer here in town. What a drag. Oh well, it'll be nice
to have a better bow.
Thanks, y'all!!
