Re:

Laura, What is your definition of
"real". What's real to you may not be real to me and visa versa. As
beauty is in the eye of the beholder, so is "real" music in the ear
of each listener. Us cellists can sometimes be blinded to the entire
spectrum of all of the musical genres. Cellists need to broaden
their musical horizons and expose themselves to diverse and
enriching non-musical experiences as well.

Re:
Hooray!
Finally, people who think like me!
The only good thing that Tchaikovsky ever wrote is the Elegy in
Serenade for Strings, and Swan Lake.
The rest is
pathetic-wallowing-driviling-depressed. . .well, I can't even think
of what to say
And when you think what he said about Brahms ("That giftless
@%$*%%@!*").
I suppose that it takes one to know one (not
that I'm suggesting that Brahms was giftless).
Well, there we
go. . .fortius. . . .

my just
rewards
Ironically... as I was trying in
vain to straighten my basement a bit before my student showed up
this evening, I was listening to Colorado Public Radio, and the
Colorado Symphony broadcast was on (an old one). They were playing
Francesca da Rimini and Romeo and
Juliet!
Awww.
That's what I get for badmouthing

In
Laura's Defense
I'm sure Laura will say this, but
I'll go ahead and defend her right now since I'm already
here...
Her post started with the phrase "What a music snob
(not me) might say." This means that the phrases following this
opening were NOT her viewpoint. Obviously, she doesn't feel that
classical musicians are the only ones who play "real" music, rather
she was pointing out that those who claim that classical music is
the only "real" music are the ones who fall into her category of
"musical snobs."
If you already knew this, and I completely
misinterpreted your post, I apologize.

Re:
Musical Snobbery
We had an interesting discussion in
music theory class a while back. During an exam one of the class
members was getting frustrated trying to analize a Mozart piece as
part of the test. He blurted out "I wonder if Mozart himself even
cared about all this stuff as he composed. I bet he just knew what
would sound good and wrote it!"

Define
"great"
I think we have a confusion here
between "craft" and "art". Also, we need a definition of "great". I
am very eclectic in my musical tastes, and sometimes a piece can
move me, while other times the same piece will leave me cold.
However, there are certain pieces that are masterfully crafted, and
that is a much more objective qualification. Does that make them
"better art"?
BTW, there is nothing like an oldies station to
get you going on a cleaning binge, and there is nothing like good
jazz on a cold night in front of the fireplace with popcorn and a
beer. I love classical music - of that there is no doubt. Although I
wonder sometimes if I didn't play it, if I'd love it quite as much.
My most "enlightening" experiences have happened while playing in
orchestras or quartets - something about sitting right in the middle
of all that wonderful sound. I don't think the experience is nearly
the same from the audience's perspective.
It must be this
GORGEOUS fall weather that's making me rhapsodic here!

Re:
Musical Snobbery
(thanks, Daniel)
Ernie77, not
only was my entire post meant to be sarcastic (and obviously so,
IMO), but as Daniel pointed out, I did say "What a music snob (NOT
ME) might say."
If I remember correctly, you are fairly new
to the board, so I'll point out something that most of the
'regulars' already know about me. You name the hobby/activity and
I've probably participated; rock climbing, skiing, crocheting, dog
agility trials, dressage, fish-keeping, etc. I listen to nearly
every type of music (everything from Starker's Lalo to P.J. Olssen
and Moxy Fruvous). I'm about as far from blinded to possibilities as
could be.

Re:
fall
Fall weather sure does have that
effect on people, myself included. I don't like all the stuff that
comes after fall, but autumn itself is just wonderful. Especially in
Michigan with all our maples and oaks turning bright red and
orange...

Re:

Laura,
Now I'm confused - I
thought the only reply I had posted on this thread was "Thanks for
turning this into a productive thread".
Is there some reason
that you think I didn't know your post was sarcastic or some reason
to think I have attacked you? Maybe I posted last night while sleep
walking, but I don't remember responding to your
post.

So sue me for misreading! My brain is
just about fried, with 6 night rehearsals this week, four exams, a
political rally to announce for, and working rush week for my
fraternity.
Sorry!

BRAVO - and DITTO to Ellen's
post. With age AND knowledge comes the ear and ability to hear
AND savor/appreciate/enjoy.
We (at least I) can now listen or
watch a performance and get a glimpse of what is involved as far as
technique - what the artist did for that phrase - why did they
choose those fingerings, bowings etc. to make that part sound the
way it did? What if they had tried it this way or that? Then you
have to consider what the composer had in mind - it goes on and
on.
Don't you think there are these aspects in MOST all types
of music, when broken down into their respective components?
Shoot, there are snobs everywhere in everything - we even have
doughnut snobs here on this board!

Re:

Hi Daniel and Laura, I was merely
responding to that so called mythical classical musician(who ever
that may be?). Thanks Daniel for not assuming or reading too much
into my comments. Laura, it's great that you feel that you are so
well rounded but I seemed to have hit a sore spot in your defensive
armor. I did not think that my mere statement would provoke such
hostility. By the way, I been a member of ICS since 94. Shouldn't
you at least afford me the commom courtesy of asking if I was a new
member or not? I haven't been to cello chat for a while because of
this un-friendly type behavior, and again I am subjected to this.
Can't we(cellists) all just get along! ps. I love fish too!(Koi
and Pacu).

Re:

Sorry sorry sorry. I wasn't
intending to be defensive or subjecting you to an attack or
anything. Not at all. I didn't remember seeing your moniker before
(unless you are the other Ernie who I met at the Congress). I
definitely was not trying to be hostile. So anyway, I apologize.
Hope to continue seeing you around the
boards.
