Private
email - withheld names
Just wondering - why do some of the
board community choose to keep an email address private or "code"
their user ID so the rest of us do not know who they are? To me, in
a friendly forum of fellow cellists such as this, I would assume it
better to leave your name and email address - full disclosure, don't
you think?
Any thoughts?

Re:

I'll always keep my name/email
'fully disclosed', but I have noticed that I seem to get quite a bit
of music-related spam. I think there are some companies/individuals
who find this board, copy the emails, and throw them on a mailing
list. I have gotten some interesting stuff from this, and really
it's not much of an irritant, but it may be a reason some choose to
stay anonymous.

Re:

I removed my e-mail address because
when I put it here, I suddenly started receiving junk e-mail to that
address. Also, I believe I've heard (and absolutely believe it
possible) that there are actually programs out there that will go
out and search the internet for e-mail addresses and then use them
for spam. I assume that's what's happened to me.
And, about
my name, while I'm not very good at keeping personal details to a
minimum, I do usually have it in the back of my head. If, suppose,
someone were stalking me, and they were inclined to guess where I
might post messages on the internet - everything I write here is
archived, right? So, anything I reveal about myself could easily be
discovered here by a potentially undesirable party.
Am I
paranoid? Oh, yes, probably quite. Do I have reason to be? Oh, yes,
absolutely. (no need to go into that here, though.)
So,
that's why, Todd. It's not because of you guys. It's just because
it's a scary world out there, and certain measures make some of us
feel more secure, or in the matter of spam - some measures save us
some time (in deleting junk mail!!!).

In my case, there are others that
use the same address who do not want it broadcasted.

Re:

How interesting!
My e-mail
is "private" because ezboard wouldn't let me change it. I do publish
my address at the end of each post so that I am readily available
for private comment. Interestingly enough, I don't get unsolicited
e-mail at that address.
I use my own name, I guess because
I'm not afraid of being associated with the opinions I express here.
Boy, didn't that sound pompous! I figure that if anyone from my
small town, or the festival orchestra cello section I regularly
participate in were to log on here, they would know who I am without
seeing my name. So I try to bite my tongue when tempted to vent some
of my nastier thoughts. I try not to say anything here that I
wouldn't say to someone's face. But I am pretty bold about what I'd
say to someone's face!!!
Hmm, now I'm off the subject, sort
of.

Re:

I'm not sure if my email is public
or not. Might be a good thing to know.
As for why I don't use
my real name for my User Name, is simply because I like "Matthias"
more than I like "Aaron." There is an abundance of Aaron's in this
world, and not too many Matthias's and I enjoy being unconventional.
(sometimes. other times, tradition is best.)Although, "Matthias" is
more plausible to be my actual name than some other people's user
names. Plus, if my parents had any imagination at all, my name
would be different. The story is that they opened the book of baby
names to the first page, and "Aaron" being the first name they saw,
they stopped the search and settled on that.

Actually, I would like to know how
to put my information on the ez-board profile. I don't know why it's
all blank.

Hmmm.... seems like you might have
better luck getting answers to those great mysteries (and more
answers on the other questions) if you re-posted this on the main
cello chat board. Just a thought.

changing your icon...
intela stella,
You might want
to change your icon - the size needs to be a tiny 10 X 10 pixels,
otherwise it will show as a broken image as yours has. It's tough to
fit anything into such a small space, but give it a try!

I can see your point, Todd, but,
who's to say someone calling herself "Jane Doe" really is named Jane
Doe, and that any bio/other info she shares w/us is true? In a way I
like seeing what kind of creative nom de plumes people can come up
with on the boards. I don't use my given And surname because there
are too many nuts out there who can find out too much stuff about
you with only a little info to go on. And you figure, unless we meet
others from the board in carbon space, we'll never really "know"
each other anyway, so it just seems to make the "real name" thing
less important. Shrug. :)

Hey Todd, I guess most people
look at these public forums as you would look at a public swap meet.
You don't walk up to a stranger, talk to them for ten minutes and
then say, "Oh hey, next time you're in town, come by my house...its
1313 Mockingbird Lane." They say on the internet, only disclose what
you feel comfortable with a stranger knowing. I myself am not too
worried about a stranger hassling me or spamming me (the delete
checked button works great and I'm a certified peace officer, so I'm
covered on both fronts ). But I
guess we should all remember that while we are all cello fans, how
well do we REALLY know anyone? Daryl

What
about names?
Ok, so I can understand why some
don't want to give out email addresses, although I have no problem
with it personally. What I wonder is why the mysterious "code names"
in lieu of real names or portions of real names (i.e. Joe S). I've
specified a few of them, like OyOy, Flyer23, and 42, and heard only
from 42. Is there a privacy issue I'm not getting here? To me,
again, it would be nice to know who it is all of us is chatting with
on the board, and since the music world is quite small, there is
always a chance we might run into each other somewhere down the
line.

Yup, I think so, Todd. Besides, who's to know
if you're really named Todd French?? (I don't doubt you are, BTW.)

Re:
What about names?
Well, I only have my partial name,
although my real whole name has been mentioned on this board before
(not by me, though). Still, I do try to avoid giving it, because I
am a girl, and I've always been taught that we girls have to be
especially cautious. I do have fierce, beastly dogs to protect me,
but still.... Perhaps more of us are girls than you think?
Another guess I would have is that some people might want to
vent through an alter-ego, and this really isn't an inappropriate
place to do it, I suppose. MaryK has a point: how do we really know
that your name is even Todd French? (personally, I believe it is,
but I couldn't produce concrete evidence of it right now. )
Oh,
and the other reason I would guess is just because it's fun, and
clever, and yet another way to be creative. And after all, the trend
in user-ID's (at least in my experience) has never really been to
use your real whole name, as spaces aren't "allowed" in many types
of software. So when starting up here, many people might use the
same ID's they use somewhere else.
Hey - and isn't "42" the
answer to life, the universe, and everything?

Re:

lblake,
Let me guess - either
you have two ferocious dogs, or you have two dogs that think they
are ferocious...
We have two dogs as well, both sound
ferocious with their barking, and one could actually easily take
down a grown man, but she doesn't know that so I won't be telling
her! Neither would know what to do if they actually had to defend
us, but at least they can scare the violators away with a good
fierce bark!!
On a similar note - I think dogs are the very
best form of "burglar" protection for instruments (and everything
else for that matter). Alarms can be easily disabled, and locks are
nothing to a skilled burglar, but most don't want to mess with a dog
- just in case.

Re:

Hey Todd, I will admit, a dog is
a better security guard than a cat. My loving feline would hide
first if given the chance in the face of an armed intruder. Her
other alternative would be to help them load up my valuables. I
have to agree with the others on the sense of names. I remember
earlier this summer, a man was killed because he thought he was
meeting a woman. Instead, he scheduled his own robbery and death. It
was a man pretending to be a woman. On the internet (or with my ISP;
the infernalnet), you can be whoever/whatever you
want. Daryl PS. My screen name isn't sexual; at the time I
created my Yahoo account, I was working nights at a Whataburger to
pay my way through the police academy.
