painted
cello?
Before my last lesson I got the
chance to have a look on the cello of one of my teacher's other
students (we never say something but of course we compare our
instruments ). That cello
has nice flamed sides and back but I thought the flameing looks a
littel bit wierd. I got a closer look and now I think that the wood
was not actually flamed but has it painted on. Is that possible? I
would guess it's a lot of work to paint that.

Painted
Cello
Yes it's very possible that the
cello has painted on flames. Many celli and even some violins, but
not nearly as many I believe, had sprayed on flames put on plain
maple around the early 1900's and there after. With the advent of
air brushes this became a fairly common practice on some inexpensive
student instruments made in Germany or there abouts. Best way to
tell if an instrument has sprayed on flames is to see if the flames
turn when you rotate the cello. Sometimes the flames are painted
extremely well though and it really is convincing from a
distance.

Wouldn't you be able to tell if the
flame was real by looking through the f-hole as well?
