Won
some money to be used for music....HELP ME!
Well, last June I won a scholarship
fund type of thing-$250! It was awarded to a graduating student who
"demonstrated musical talent, a desire to further their musical
studies, and had a profound love for it." So I have $250 to be
spent- only on music-related stuff, e.g. music, bows (I'm NOT buying
a 250 dollar bow!). I've decided to use it to buy cds, because I
think for me that's how the money would be best spent. So...it's an
awfully broad question, but...any ideas for me? I have almost the
entire quartet literature, so I don't need many suggestions for that
though they'd certainly be welcome. I was thinking more along the
lines of cello concertos. (Probably not very relevant to CC, but I
would love some violin concerti suggestions, too!) I really have no
idea where to start- I have one great recording of the Haydns by
Jackie du Pre, but almost nothing else. HELP!!

Rostropovich - The Russian Years 13
CD set. Historically very important.
For Violin music
recomendations, try to get Ekifri's suggestions (she's a cello chat
member). She's got GREAT taste in violin performances and
recordings.

Re:
some suggestions
The Naxos label has TONS of great
repertoire, and most of the CDs are under $10. I'd recommend
Feuermann's Haydn DM and Dvorak concerti recording, Naxos
8.110908.
Some of my other favorites:
1) Mercury 432
010-2. Starker plays Schumann, Lalo, and Saint-Saens
concerti.
2) Vivarte S2K 48 047. Bylsma plays Bach Suites
1-6. GREAT recording.
3) Delos DE 3162. "Spirit Murmur," the
Shanghai Quartet plays Hovhaness and Zhou.
4) Virgin Classics
61490. Isserlis plays Elgar, Bloch, Kabalevsky #2, Tchaik, and
Strauss.
5) BMG Classics 456 946-2. The Great Pianists
series, Sviatoslav Richter. I only have the first of his 3 albums in
the series, and practically have it memorized from listening to it
so often. Some phenomenal ivory tickling. Chopin E, Picts at an
Exhibition, and Schubert, Rachmaninoff and Liszt.

If it's cello concertos you're
after, there's a double CD by Yo-Yo Ma called Great Cello Concertos
with the Dvorak, Elgar, Schumann, Saint-Saens and Haydn 2. Label is
CBS records. I'd also recommend Ma's Soul of the Tango CD - great
when you want some more relaxed listening.

Ekifri's suggestions?
Well, I've been advised to get them.
So? I really am a fan of Rostropovich, so I think I'll get that
Russian Years cd....Yo-Yo isn't my favorite, simply cause it's a bit
too reserved for my taste (can't you tell when I say that Jacqueline
du Pre is my favorite?! ) As for
quartets, I'm so partial to the Juilliard...I can't bear to listen
to anything else! (That sounds so screwed up...to say that I'm so
partial to one thing that I can't have anything else...). I really
could also benefit from some orchestra ideas--I grew up basically
listening to quartets and cello music, so I have almost no knowledge
of the pieces that are out there for orchestra.
P.S.
Yes, I do have recordings of the Beethoven Symphonies (Toscanini,
yeah!)

Re:

Lessee now, Russian Years- I just
got that last week or so. Highly recommended- excellent set. A
definite must-have. If you like DuPre, there is a 3 cd set called
Favourite cello concertos or something. Has Both Haydn, Boccherini,
Schumann, Saint-Saens, Monn, elgar, dvorak. good set. Oh and get
the Feuermann cd with Haydn D and the dvorak. It's terrific. Best
Haydn i've heard. For Violin? I have Heifetz (on Naxos)
playing Beethoven and Brahms concerti. I love that cd. there is a
double cd with Heifetz and Feuermann doing the Brahms Double, as
well as the bach d minor sonata, Wieniawski Saint-Saens - lots of
great stuff. David Oistrakh is incredible. There is a 5 cd set
on the Melodya label with brahms, sibelius, tchaikovsky, dvorak
concerti, one cd of various shorter pieces, and I don't remember
what else. I believe it is called the Oistrakh edition (available at
amazon for sure) Perlman recorded the Mendelssohn and Prokofiev
No. 2 concerti with the cso (BMG label,?) which is
terrific. Zukerman has a cd of Bruch, Vieuxtemps, and Lalo
(symphonie espanol) that is also great.
I have the Isserlis
cd mentioned, but I'm not crazy about it and I do not like his
tchaikovsky on there. But, I do like rostropovich dvorak and
tchasikovsky- great cd. And don't forget Starker Plays Kodaly-
another great cd. and although I don't always like Yo Yo, I love
his beethoven sonatas with emmanuel ax, I also like duPres'- she has
a set with all 5 plus the variations. (EMI label?) If you need
specific info on any of these cds, l;et me know and I will look it
up for you.
Oh yes, I nearly forgot Nathan Milstein on violin
is wonderful- no specific recommendation of the top of my head, but
I love his playing, also Rabin's paganini caprices are unbeatable.
Perlman's are also good. Gil Shaham is another great
player.
And the Beaux Arts trio playing anything is worth
having. I have them in the Dvorak trios, and the Beethoven trios.
happy Listening. -eva

Re:

by all means go for the Heifetz
recordings for violin concertos, if you have Beethoven, look for the
Sibelius, and for Bruch's Scottish Fantasy, they are on RCA Red
Label, numbers 09026-61744-29(Sibelius,Prokofiev,Glazunov), and,
09026-61745-2,(Bruch, Vieuxtemps), I think that they are the best of
the best . There is also a great video of Heifetz and Gregor
Piatigorsky on Kultur films, #1101, a two for one treat...happy
spending...
