Civic
Orch of Chicago - to DS and GMS
Hi, Gary and David, tonite I took a
peek at the CSO website and discovered this COC "training
orchestra." Do either of you "mentor" any of the cellists? A
high-caliber training orch sounds like a cool idea, what're your
opinions of it? Do you think it helps the folks get "real" orchestra
jobs eventually? Do its members earn any sort of automatic
preference when a CSO opening comes up and auditions are held?
What's the calibre of the orchestra (if you can proffer an opinion
w/o stepping on anyone's toes)? Any info you care to pass on will be
greatly appreciated (not that I'm looking to audition for it or
anything, just curious, as usual...
<g>)!
TIA, MaryK

Re:

Both Gary and I were members of
Civic. We both cherish the sectionals with Frank Miller. That was an
unforgettable experience which can never be duplicated. I think
it's a pretty good orchestra right now. They have a lot of
rehearsals. It probably does help you get "real" orchestra jobs,
if you use it as part of your training in orchestra
playing. There is absolutely no preference given to Civic members
when a CSO opening comes up. There is some preference, in some
sections, given to Civic members when there is subbing
opportunities. However, many sections have gone to auditioning subs
behind a screen, just like the regular auditions. (In our last sub
audition, I believe we added two Civic members to our sub
list.) Hope this is helpful. David
