The
Obligatos are sounding better now
I've had these obligatos on for a
couple of weeks. They sounded loud and bright at first. They still
have that initial power but have settled into a warmer, "sweeter"
sound. This might also be due to my new cello "playing in"
though.

Re: The

It took my Obligatos nearly a month
for the response and full sound to settle in, but it's there now.
And the lower two Obligatos have become this incredible, warm, rich,
beautiful, powerful, yet still gentle sound. (sounds like a
contradiction.... but it's not). I was very happy with Helicores,
and then happier still with Belcantos (warmer, richer than Helicores
on my cello) but the Obligatos I'm finally finding are the sound
I've been searching for.
I hope it's not just the summer
humidity, though. Time will tell. I'll be sure to give them a chance
through all seasons.
I didn't actually know if there WAS a
specific sound I was really looking for, until I heard it. I'm
surprised at how long it took, but if they will sound like this, I
will stick with Obligatos for sure. They were still very nice while
they were breaking in... but when they got there - WOW. I hope every
cello I ever have will have a string that matches it to make a sound
like this! AND, I hope I can find the same thing for my D string
now, without losing the integrity of the G&C!!! (on with the
experiments.)
Gosh, this is fun!

Re: The

I had the same experience with
Obligato Strings. They sounded bright and almost "metallic" when I
first put them on. I was also involved in the pre-release beta
testing of these strings with Pirastro and the final set is a big
improvement over the earlier version. I do find, however, that they
are a bit slower to respond in the bass end than other strings I
have used.

Re: The

I would agree - even though they've
quickened-up over time, they still are marginally slower than
Helicores or Belcantos on my cello. The sound, though (for me - I'm
not playing incredibly fast passages all the time, though!) is very
much worth the compromise.
I'm really surprised at how MUCH
they've quickened up, though. I really didn't think they'd be
acceptable at first, and had I been trying them during the orchestra
season (I've been playing them through the summer), I may not have
stuck it out. It's remarkable, though, how much they've improved. I
wouldn't have imagined there could be such a
difference.
Still, though, wow. Pretty sound.

Re: The

I really like the sound of them too.
I almost took them off after the first week, but something made me
hang in with them and I am glad I did. I think that a lot of people
will not leave these strings on long enough to hear how they really
can sound.
I advised Pirastro of this longer than usual
break-in time during my evaluation of the beta strings and I noticed
that they made a small mention of this in the leaflet that
accompanied the strings. The original beta D string was awful and
they sent me another to see if the first string was the problem, but
it was as bad as the first. I really like the final version of the
D. I have always had problems with this string on my cello. I was
previously using Larsen A and D strings.
I just, this
afternoon, adjusted my bridge, moving it over towards the base bar
about 3mm and what an improvement it made in the response of the
lower strings. It always amazes me how little changes like that can
change the playability of an instrument.
The cello is such a
magical thing!

Re:
D-string
What exactly was it that was bad
about the early issue d-strings?

Re:
D-string
The D string had a very metallic
sound that did not mellow with playing. If fact, all the strings had
this metallic ring to them at first, but the others quieted down
after about a week or so. Not so for the beta D string, at least on
my cello. Another person on Cello Chat, who trying the beta set,
experienced the same problem. Thankfully, they got it right in the
final version. I especially like the Obligato A on my cello.
