You
might want a look-see
I bought the Rostropovich video
(Haydn C & D w/ I. Brown; available at Sharmusic). Watched it 50
times at least. It really is very good, and there's nothing on TV
anyway.

Re: You

What's Shar's phone #? (I've never
used it...I feel so ignorant...) I love Rostropovich's cd of the
piece...it would be wonderful to watch it.

Re:
Haydn C Major
Think light, think elegant - don't
over-romanticize: No sloppiness for the sake of
expression.
Don't go overboard with dynamic contrasts
in the sustained passages. Keep it stately and be mindful of
classical protocol.
Left & right hand articulation is
critical: Beginnings & endings of notes must be
clean.
Duport etudes are a good prep for this
piece.
1st movement, not too fast
2nd movement, not
too slow - count quarter notes - don't over-dramatize the
modulation to minor
3rd movement, fast and bubbly - your
thumb position has to be well-developed - stay away from frog on
the runs - get the correct fingerings or you're dead
meat

Re:
Haydn C Major
Thanks so much-- that's exactly what
I wanted. For the second movement, I do often count in eighth notes
when the meter is 2/4, but I realize that it's usually more
effective when your inner pulse is counting quarters. As for not
romanticizing too much and keeping it elegant and clean...I've been
told I have a tendency to go off and do things du Pre...

Re:

Her approach (IMO) works great for
Elgar, but not so well with Haydn. I do like the
Rostropovich recording, however.

Haydn

Hmm...I do have to say my favorite
recording of the Haydn is hers, followed by Rostropovich in a close
second and...Yo-yo in a very distant last.
