please
Please PLEASE
In a fit of pique once, as a mom
with two little girls with a cookie sheet full of about 3,000
crayons, bickering over who got to use the pink one, I snapped,
gabbed the crayons and threw them all up in the air. There are still
little wax confetti marks all over the ceiling. Nobody has the heart
to paint over them. Ah, memories.... Ahem. Anyway, I am about at
that point right now. I understand free speech, opinions, knowledge
v. ignorance, but for crying out loud, people are nicer to strangers
on the street than they are in our little "community". Is there ANY
reason we can't just read the opinions, think to ourselves, "Wow,
that person is an idiot" and either (1) let it go or (2) throw your
own crayons at the ceiling? It is a great tension reliever. I really
like this place, but it is getting to be less fun to come here, and
I am more fearful each time I post.
We all have experiences,
feelings, opinions, and the fact that we are writing them in this
forum, to me, is no different than saying it to someone's face. I'm
sorry I brought anything up, but I have nothing to throw except a
few pleas for courtesy, tolerance, and realization that we don't all
come from the same background. Sorry I exploded. My kids eventually
forgave me, by the way. Bye.

Mom stuff
Your story reminds me of the time I
went to put bread and butter pickles on the toasted cheese sandwich
my daughters had just burned for me, only to discover that the two
pound jar of pickles opened the day before contained nothing but
pickle juice! I threw the sandwich to the dogs and stomped out of
the house. Then I drove to Barnes and Noble and was consoled by
finding "The Soloist" had just been released.
(I agree with
you on the real subject, too!)

Anarchy
in Action
(Hey -- another CC
motto!)
Your point is well taken, but actually, in spite of
it all, this group is pretty civil by Internet standards (or lack
thereof). I regularly prowl thru several photography-related Usenet
groups, as well as some music-related ones. The steam pressure can
get pretty high. Of course there are people who delight in seeing
what they can provoke, oft referred to as "trolls." And they usually
manage to hook someone who has to have the last word no matter how
many exchanges it takes.
We won't even discuss what
transpires on some of the alt.x.y.z Usenet groups.
Mayhaps we
should rejoice that we have opinions, some even held passionately --
so much of the mainstream public appears to be drifting into " uh --
yeah, whatever."

Good
cello photos
Because you are not a mom. Although
you do bake better bread than I do. The aroma wafted through one of
your posts on the CBN board. I gained 7 pounds while I
read.
Anyway, back to cellos. There is a picture on the front
of the Heifetz/Rubinstein/Feuermann "Archduke" CD I have, and I've
been looking at it on my desk all day. I love that photo. I don't
collect photos -- despite DS's attempts to subliminally get to me --
and there may well be a book out there I WILL get one of these days
-- but I was wondering what some other photos of cellists are that
really capture the essence of the moment. Do you know this one, the
one with Feuermann and the cigarette dangling as he plays?

Re:

I know I've seen that one, but don't
own it.
Hmmm -- maybe you can twist an arm or two to get
video captures from the WCC movies?!
The photo groups I've
been lurking on are aimed at taking pictures, film and film
processing, and equipment (talk about expensive obsessions!). Every
now and again someone posts a link to their lastest exciting work,
but so far it's been far away exotic landscapes or some magnified
comparison of Fuji xyz vs Kodak abc for grain size. Alas, about
my only cello photo is on my web page -- a forlorn plywood monster
held upright by a wall and speaker cabinet -- no drama.
I
have a CD of pieces by Auguste Franchomme played by Roel Deltiens
and a few cohorts that has an interesting painting reproduced on the
front. It's a tall woman in a dramatic pose with cello (family rated
too).
I'll keep my eyes open for some -- but no, I can't
afford any more obsessions!

Re: CD
Cover Photo
The woman on the cover of the Roel
Dieltiens-Franchomme CD is the famous Portugese cellist Guilhermina
Suggia. She was a student of Casals and although 12 years his
junior, she later became his "partner" both cellistically and in
life. They had a serious falling-out and the relationship ended
abruptly. She was reportedly a talented and temperamental
cellist.

dangling cigarettes
This is one of my all time favorite
photos, and has been with me for almost a decade already- however
for that cover they took out the background, which was a living
room- either Heifetz's or Rubinstein's I assume.
Feuermann
playing with that cigarette dangling from his mouth makes quite a
statement as well- I tried to imitate it many times and found that
he must have had supremely relaxed/detached facial muscles while
playing. I found it incredibly hard to keep my face still enogh to
pull it off. In fact it's pretty hard even with an unlit
cigarette.
And as to that recording- there are not
words...
As to being nice...if it makes you feel any better,
I'm not that nice to strangers on the street either! (Too many years
in NY) Have you sen the photo of Heifetz and Feuermann recording the
Brahms Double? For an original of that, one could certainly loosen
my wallet...David?

Terry M. - Your description of
Guilhermina Suggia is interesting - you can use almost that exact
same description for Madelyn Foley.

Re:
dangling cigarettes
Ebay has been a wonderful source for
me of photographs. I have purchased a 1941 Victor "Record Review"
magazine that includes 2 different photos from the Heifetz/Feuermann
Brahms sessions. I also recently purchased an 8X10 publicity still
of Feuermann, issued by RCA Victor, that I'd never seen
before---shows Feuermann in a very relaxed pose on a stool with his
cello----I plan to frame this with an autographed program that I
bought from David; the program is from Feuermann's LAST concert
(Thor Johnson conducting the Philadelphia Orchestra---Dvorak
Concerto---May 7, 1942---Hill Auditorium---Ann Arbor,
Michigan)

Memorabilia chat for Feuermann geeks
Wow- didn't realize there were other
photos from the Brahms Double. Did you know they recorded that with
no prior rehearsal with the orchestra? They didn't even know what
they would be recording or with whom until they got to the
studio.
So it was you who bought that publicity picture! I
have a color xerox of that picture framed (courtesy of Dave Hermann)
and didn't feel like parting with more money for the original at the
moment.
The program you have sounds fascinating - the only
one I have is from a recital in Tucson, AZ - no date. With Wolfgang
Rebner at the piano. Beethoven Op69, Stravinsky Suite, Grieg sonata,
Bloch Prayer, Granados Spanish Dance and Popper Spinnlied.
Autographed by both. Must chase down the date someday.
Is
Biddulph gonna do another CD? Regards
