Stringworks Artist Cello
I received an Artist Cello yesterday,(9/14/00).
Thanks to Pat @ Stringworks,( She's the greatest! )
And was totally blown away by the quality, the woods
the finish, the set up & the sound .It seems unbelievable
that a cello this fine can be had for what it costs.

Re: Stringworks Artist Cello
Wow, sounds like a good deal. I've been hearing alot of good stuff about the Artist cello from Stringworks. I still firmly believe that you can find a high-quality instrument for a small investment if you look in the right places. It goes to show that, in some cases, tone and $ are mutually- exclusive. Just think, the tone quality of wood cellos improve over time- the more you play it, the better it will sound!

I'm sure you have read my thread regarding these cello's. I've had mine for several weeks now and yes, they are truly wonderful. Of course I've never played on a really expensive cello but I love my Artist. The sound is just beautiful as is the instrument itself. I'm glad you are as happy with yours.

At the risk of being redundant ...
My Artist Cello from StringWorks is wonderful.

Looks. I've never seen a more gorgeous stringed instrument. The flaming is beautiful without being ostentatious. When I look at the side of the cello in bright light, the finish creates a deep brown three-dimensional effect -- almost like a holograph. The picture on the web site does not do justice to the attractiveness of the front of the cello, which contains interesting vertical patterns. The rosewood fittings add an appealing visual tone to this lovely instrument.

Setup. The bridge and fingerboard are shaped precisely to facilitate easy playing (i.e., the strings are high enough to avoid striking the fingerboard when vibrating, and low enough to make for almost effortless playing). The use of expensive Helicore strings confirms that only premium quality components are used in constructing this cello. Care was taken in preparing this cello; I can't find one scratch on it anywhere.

Sound. The cello sounds as good as it looks -- and it's beautiful. It produces a warm pleasing sound in 4th position on the C and G strings. Unlike my previous cello, notes high on the G string are as delightful to my ear as notes played in first position on the D string. Notes in thumb position on D and A strings also sound very nice.

The Madison Community Orchestra, of which I am a member, is performing the William Tell Overture this fall. The opening of the overture starts with a solo for five cellos. The first cello's part goes from a D# (1st position C string) to a high E (2 octaves above middle C) where the A string is pressed almost to the very end of the fingerboard. Throughout this
entire range, the Artist Cello produces tones that are worthy of a fine cello.

About me. I played cello through high school and college. During graduate school and my corporate career, my cello sat unused in a closet. Three years ago, I decided to leave corporate life (organizational psychologist for a large international company), relocate to a better place to raise a family, and semi-retire (at the relatively young age of mid-40s). Two years ago, my daughter took up violin at her grade school. I volunteered to help out the strings teacher during their strings classes and got interested again in playing cello. Last year, an acquaintance invited me to join the local community orchestra. I did and have been re-learning how to play after more than two decades of inactivity. A few weeks ago, I started playing in a string quartet that meets every couple weeks. This past weekend, I rewarded myself with the purchase of the Artist Cello described above. It's not only a reward; it's also a commitment to keep playing.

I'm not associated with StringWorks in any way. I'm writing this note because I conducted an extensive search for a high quality cello at an affordable price -- and I am delighted with the results of this search.

Bob
