Yes, that's certainly what I look
for in a cellist...as if we needed further proof that classical
music was doomed. Anyone remember Danny Gaisford?
Actually
Zuill's Chicago review was generally positive and also very amusing
- if I were less consumed by sloth I would copy it here. Paul? In a
similar vein has anyone ever seen that legenday review of Zuckerman
from a small Nevada paper where the reviewer was obviously overcome
by lust and wrote things along the lines of "What a pity that he did
not turn his back to the audience more, so that we could view his
well proportioned rear"..etc. I heard the CD of that Scandanavian
vioinist/Playboy model Linda Brava. It was really not good. (not a
shock I guess). And let's not forget Nina Kotova. Still waiting for
"Brittany Spears- The Classical Album". I miss the old ugly guys who
PLAYED beautifully...

Re:

BA,
I do remember Danny
Gaisford. He won the concerto competition when Shostakovich #2 was
the concerto. I'm nost sure I see the connection.
The thing
is, Zuill IS a great player (IMHO). Perhaps you are disturbed by the
way they speak of his "good looks"? I don't know. I'll admit, he
does have that. But if I were to listen to his performances without
any visual bias, I'd still think he's a great player.
I
wouldn't write him off with Brava, Kotova, etc.

I know it's silly, but ya know what
I like?
When I went to that site, right at the top of my
browser it said "Zuill Bailey - Cellist."
I do a lot of
websurfing during my lunch hour. I can't tell you how many times
I've gone back to catalog new book marks after a week or two of
cruising cyberspace to find maybe 20 to 30% of them show up as
"(home)," or "left frame" or "index," or "{add title here}." Ya
gotta log in and call 'em up again to find out what the heck they
are. His says "Zuill Bailey - Cellist."
He tells us right up
front. If his cello playing lives up to his web interface, he's
gotta be good.

Re:
Zuill Baliey
Well, this is where we simply have
different opinions. While I do find Zuill has a good overall
facility, his playing at the time I knew it was both mannered and
musically immature, mainly concerned with 'showmanship'. I mentioned
Danny, because I find their style, strength and weaknesses similar.
But, to be fair, I haven't heard Zuill in many years-perhaps he has
changed. The reviewer's comments lead me to believe they have not,
but I'm only guessing. BTW I do like Zuill as a person. And I am
always disturbed when reviewers focus on a players looks- we expect
that from the more superficial members of the audience, but now it
comes from reviewers and managers. Bottom line is this- Zuill is a
decent player, but he doesn't have anything that 20 other guys I
know don't also have- some more so. This is the way of the world
alas.
Enjoy that weather. in the 100 degree plus days we've
been having I almost feel like going back there. Unfortunately they
it would pay only about a third of what I get here, and it's so
expensive to live there. Did ya ever assemble that trio? Hey is
there any chance you would be free to play a symphony gig in Las
Vegas Sep 18-23rd? Conductor friend of mine is desperate and looking
to bring in cellists from LA or SD...email me if interested

what a
nice looking cellist
I mean I guess that shouldn't count
for anything -- but dang, he's down right cute!
Anyone like
that group the "Dixie Chicks"? First time I saw them (I had never
heard them), I thought (which was mean), "Well, she's too pretty, I
bet she plays like crap." But the violinist plays pretty good in a
bluesgrass kind of way.
I bet some people think this Zuill
Bailey is bad just because he's cute -- there is that sort thing in
classical music. If you're not over 60 with a growth on your face
and hair coming out of your ears and nose you can't really be taken
too seriously . . .

Re:

Well, of course his good looks
shouldn't count for anything. But, however, people should not
write off his playing as not good simply because of them. I can
think of a few young cellists who are quite good looking but whose
playing I don't enjoy...but then again, if they were not attractive
I wouldn't like their playing more! Truthfully, Zuill's is my kind
of playing (the kind that often skates close to the edge...!) What
I've heard of his playing has been quite good- technical facility,
flair...he actually studied with a person I know well, so I know him
a bit, too. He's a really good person and a great cellist...so what
if he's cute?

It's pronounced Zool. He took
lessons from my current teacher and all my teacher ever talks about
is Zuill, and he has a right to, he is a very talented man.

BA,
I've emailed HAL. SD is
nice (as usual), sure beats 100+ temps.
Reviewers are
probably not helping him if they focus on his "looks". But they
(reviewers) are probably hurthing their own credibility the most. I
think of what someone reported in this thread about a Zuckerman
review and how she/he wished he had turned his backside to face the
audience more!!???? I don't thini THAT reviewer will be working for
the NY Times if they see that review!
The Las Vegas Phil? If
it's in VEgas, will I have to Don an Elvis costume? Just
kidding!

Yes, not to mention that there has
been no rain in Texas since March, 1907. No wonder I keep hesitating
in giving up my old job... Sent you an email-keeps getting
returned.
That Zuckerman review was from a small Las Vegas
Paper, BTW.
