Buying
a cello as a secondary instrument
My major instruments chronologically
are clarinet, saxophone, viola. I would like to buy a cello for my
own enjoyment. I have a Scott Cao violin which I am quite happy with
and am considering a SC cello. I have also been offered a cello by
Joseph Hoffman(2000) from the workshop of Christopher Pu in Chicago
for $2400 (instrument only) I have played it briefly and like it but
I have no idea what it might be worth, nor how it compares to the
Cao which I have not played or other possibilities. Any information
or suggestions would be appreciated. Performance is not an issue but
I have to enjoy playing it.

Re:

Christopher Pu instruments can be
quite fantastic, but it depends on the model. I'm not familiar with
that one in particular, but the price seems to be fair. If you are
interested in celli, look around the web and find other companies
offering celli in the same price range, or even check around and
compare prices on the factory instruments like Christopher
Pu.
