Ravel
Duo for Violin/Cello
Has anyone played this? I haven't
had a chance to look at the music yet, but I am absolutely in love
with the recording (I'm listening to the Kennedy/Harrell CD). It is
so lush and complex sounding, even with just two instruments. Very
unique. I am curious as to the difficulty level, so let's say
Prokofiev Sinfonia Concertante is a 10, Lalo is a 6 or 7,
Saint-Saens is a 5. Where's the Ravel fit
in?

Yeah Yeah, I know. Bad 'rating' system.
But there really isn't a good one, either.

My dad's played the piece numbers of
times. From what I've understood (and your rating system ), it's way
up there in difficulty. Like, 9-10... It's a gorgeous piece,
isn't it, though? You know what is apparently the hardest part?
Making a page-turnable copy of it.

Re:

The piece is extremely hard for the
cello, and, unfairly, only moderately hard for the violin. Each
movement has one or more technical challenges that you've never seen
before. In the first & last movements, particularly, you
basically need radar to find some of the notes. But I loved
performing it once I'd put in the hours. Wish I still had the chops
for it.

Bob! You know you do. They're there
somewhere, you just have to... practice!
