"Musicality"
I am one of those poor sad people
born without any musical talent, any ear, any sense of rhythm (my
conductor says that "when God created rhythm, he left you out of the
picture"). I've been working really hard to cultivate whatever
little bit of musical talent might be hiding inside me. I sing
second-soprano in chorus--one of the hardest parts to hear. I am in
two orchestras. I listen to lots of cello music (and other music). I
read lots of books and articles and stuff about music. I try to tune
without harmonics. I am getting better, but... Does anybody have
any ideas for anything else I could do? I've finally resigned myself
to the fact that I can't be cellist if I'm not a musician and now
there is so much catching up to do!

Yes, you should be patient with
yourself. I don't know of any great musicians that were born
virtuosos. It didn't happen over night! I believe that the first
ingredient to success is DESIRE for it. You obviously have plenty of
that! Just relax with it, keep working at it, but keep enjoying
music, though. Don't allow your self- conciousness or frustration
get at you. I've been there! it's just part of the process.
Improving just takes time-day by day, as you improve and learn, you
will become more and more aware of what you need to do to more
improve and know, your ear will gradually develop, and things will
begin to happen faster and faster--not unlike a snow-ball going down
a hill, building up momentum. Perhaps your at the top of the hill
now and things seem to be going painfully slow, but as you gain
more, you will have more ability to get more.. and so on and so
on.....
