chemistry of varnish
What is the chemical name and composition of varnish? I'm doing some research on the stabalization properties of consolidants, preferrably water soluble, for heavily waterlogged artifacts.
Please contact me if you're an instrument maker with a chemistry background.

thanks!

Re: chemistry of varnish
Dear trilled,

The variants in varnish and their components are really immeasurable - you might want to do a web search for instrument makers and get their individual formulas. There might even be some significant information about Dr. Joseph Nagavary's ideas on Stradivari varnish and their properties (he is a chemist). Each maker typically will create his/her own varnish from seperate components, so you can find any combination possible.

We have only one cello maker on this board that I know of - Eric Benning - but he hasn't been on the board for some time. Perhaps he will see this message and give you further information about his varnish (without revealing the secrets!!)

I'll chime in to reccomend that you ask on the fingerboard:
fingerboard.maestronet.com
