Breval
at last!?
So, we were getting pretty ground
down working through Dotzauer 3 and 6 (there are 118 in this
collection!) when our cello teacher said, "Do you have enough to
work on?" "Well...," we said. He went into the other room and
returned with a couple of sheets. "I've been thinking about this
piece for a while," he said, but then we went on to do something
else and I had to remind him about the face-down sheets at the end
of the lesson. "Oh, yeah, just do the first couple of lines for
now," he said. It was a sonata by Breval, in C major, starting with
three chords.
I feel like I'm just being let in on a secret
that the rest of you knew about all along. So now I have to try to
remember what all has been said about this piece on this forum...

I think mostly we've said it is a
fun piece, and not too difficult, but the rhythms can be tricky,
which is probably why your teacher said to do just the first few
lines before he had a chance to look at it with you. I think you
will enjoy it. Just approach the chords like you are playing the
Haydn C major!

Re:
Breval at last!?
Yes, this one is cool. My teacher
suggested we should pick some new and significant thing to work on
for the summer. So I mentioned hearing of this piece here on the
board and said I didn't know whether it was beyond me or not. Poof!
She just happened to have a copy of it in her music case -- we spent
most of the 6 week summer session on it (the first allegro mvmt).
After the little odds and ends of beginner stuff prior to this, just
getting all the way through it seemed like an endurance test. But
yup, those first three chords, when I got them right, it seemed like
a dramatic announcement to the world "HEY, I'm past beginner now"
Tricky rhythms, yes, I still have a few rough spots in it,
but it did seem to mark a new milestone in progress, good for
emotional well-being as well as technique.
My teacher seemed
pleased with how things went, partly because apparently there is
much more lesson material available when one reaches that general
skill level.
Have fun with it.

Re:

are we talking about Dotzauer 3 and
6 from the "usual" Dotzauer book? (my book has only 113 etudes
though). Since I am working on Dotzauer 8 and have done all the
previous ones, does this mean that I am "good enough" to play Breval
too???? (please say yes
)

Dotzauer
113, 118, I'm never going to do all
of them anyway. (I have an edition published by International Music
Corp.) My teacher chose a different order -- 1, 7, 8, 3, 6 so far, I
think (if 7 is the one that starts with staccato quarter notes on
the C string). As to whether I am good enough to actually play the
Breval, well, we'll see... --PR

Rosario - just go buy it and try it.
I'll bet you'll do just fine. It's one of those pieces that makes
you glad to be a cellist.

Re:

I have a young student who worked on
the first movement of the Breval after about 1 1/2 years and did
reasonably well. Then after three years she worked on it again and
still enjoyed it and really got both movements down well.
