Weber
hard case concern
I bought a Weber hard cello case
about 3 years ago. I have experienced a rather unusual problem with
it over this period. My cello has what I would term "dull spots" to
the varnish on the lower belly where the cushioned velvet padding of
the 2 bow holders come into contact with my cello and other "dull
spotting" on the back of my cello where the velvet padding of the
cushioned supports come into contact with my cello. Needless to say,
it is very mystifying and very unsightly to look at! The "dull
spotting" really detracts from the beauty of the cello and may have
ruined the varnish.
I would like to know if any one else has
had an experience similar to mine and/or if the Weber hard cases are
causing this "dull spotting?"
Is there anything I can do to
correct my problem to my varnish caused from this "dull
spotting?"
I'm thinking that there may have been some sort of
sheen on the velvet fabric when I purchased my case and over the
course of time this "dull spotting" was occurring?
I sure
would appreciate some advice!
Mystified,

Re:

My suggestion is to e-mail Leroy
Weber and tell him what is happening. He's the kind of guy who would
want to know about something like this. www.webercaseco.com is the
URL, I believe. (If it isn't, you should be able to find the case
company home page by doing a web search.) Good luck! Let us know how
it turns out, several of us have Weber
cases.
Cheers, MaryK

Re:

I have had that problem with my
cello, as have other people I know, all with different case types.
It seems to happen with all stringed
instruments.
Unfortunately the 'velvet' used in these cases
is acrylic velvet, which is actually quite abrasive!
You
could make a silk bag for your cello (I have one of these). You can
buy (at least in the UK) 100% pure silk in Indian Sari shops quite
cheaply (it comes in beautiful colours). Buy enough to make a simple
bag, that covers the body of the cello. If you want to be posh you
could make a drawstring.
Silk has a very fine texture that
doesn't leave 'lint lines' or dull spots. It shouldn't make the
problem worse either.

Weber
Case concern.
A similair thing happened to my
Becker and Benning cellos when I got new carpet installed in my
practice room. I layed the instruments on their side as usual and in
the course of several days both instruments had small carpet
impressions on their sides. I talked to Carl Becker about it and
then to the Benning's and found out that the carpet being made of
petroleum products releases some sort of a chemical the newer it it.
The older the carpet the less this is a problem though. So I started
talking to some people in my orchestra about the same thing and
several people have had the same problem with cases and carpet. Most
have chalked it up to soft varnish but it seems that the older the
cases and carpet get the less prone to etching the varnish they
become. Now my carpet is two years old and I could leave either
instrument on it's side indefinitely.

Re:
Weber hard case concern
This happened to me with my Weber
case, too. I'd forgotten about it, it's been so long ago. I assumed
it was from the foam or glue or something, and my case was purchased
as a "second." I put flannel (100% cotton) over the foam and had no
more problems.

Re:
Weber hard case concern
Keep in mind that hard cases are
made to a generic pattern, a one-size-fits-all. And as we all know,
cellos come in tons of variations of size/shapes, though the
variations can be very minute. I'd suggest the silk bag idea,
too.
I have a Weber (my third) and have yet to have a problem
with it, other than the snaps on the shoulder strap breaking...
bought some cheapo carabiners at REI and fixed the
strap.
