Cello
Community -- Senior Thesis
Dear cellist, I am a senior
studying Music and Social Anthropology at Harvard University. As a
joint concentrator, I am required to write a thesis that links the
two subjects together. As a cellist, I have chosen to write about
cello festivals through the ethnographic study and participant
experience of three cello festivals in progress, and I hope that you
will be able to help me by sending your thoughts and ideas about
what you have experienced... I am looking to answer the
following questions: why are there so many festivals, gatherings, or
congresses dedicated to the cello (as opposed to the violin, for
example)? What happens when these professionals, amateurs, and
individuals from widely different schools of cello-playing and
music-making come together? In addition to these salient inquiries,
I will be investigating subsidiary ones as well: how has the cello
crossed or blended boundaries, thus being a "flexible" instrument?
And in what ways has the cello acted as the tie that binds people
together? I plan to propose that a distinct "cello-community"
exists. I would greatly appreciate any insight into what you
think about these ideas. Moreover, I would be interested to know
about your experiences at any cello gatherings you have been a part
of. I look forward to hearing from many of you soon.
Best
wishes, Jennifer Lee

Re:
Cello Community -- Senior Thesis
Unless I missed it, I would suggest
you include an e-mail address if you hope to get detailed responses.
I used to view it as a community, but now it strikes me as
more of a microcosm. The cello brings us together, but once we get
together, there are the same issues you find anywhere. Generation
gaps, socioeconomic, intellectual, political {gasp}, tradition v.
alternative in terms of music, posture, technique. The need to
reinvent the wheel, as it were. Evolution, growing pains. Microcosm.
The official food is the donut, many of us are animal
lovers, and I like to think we basically have a sense of humor.
I did attend the World Cello Congress but that is the only
festival I've been to, and I wouldn't even know where to begin to
answer your questions. Good luck.

And
Ellen please don't forget
We all have bad backs, are sick of
people asking what we 'got in that thing', some of us are worried if
our hands are big enough, if our legs are too long, then there's the
man vs. woman thing as it relates to sound (shoot, let's not forget
that one - lost DG forever over that!), etc., etc...
oh, and
should we have just one board or many...
