South America
Well, after a flight that started at 6 p.m. last night, we arrived at the hotel at about 10:30 this morning.
The ride in went through a section of run-down buildings like I've seen only in Bucharest, maybe even worse.
I saw a number of orchestra members heading for their 6 hour bus tour. I had wanted to go, but after the long flight, I'm glad I won't be spending 6 hours on the bus. (So I'm sitting in front of a computer instead.)
The hotel is across the street from the beach, which looks inviting. But our guide said that you're supposed to read the last page of the newspaper every morning to see if it's safe to go in the water or not.

Tomorrow is the first rehearsal and concert. I think the rehearsals and concerts will be a good break from the hanging around the hotel lobby or sitting in my room.

This internet cafe is about 5 blocks from the hotel in a rather run-down area, with really nothing to look at.I'm pretty sure I wouldn't want to come here at night.
I'll tell Gary about it and I'll sure we'll come back together.

Re: South America
You'd better show up soon or we're going to start to worry.

Sounds like you guys will return trim and svelte. You can't eat the food, you're constantly pirouetting around to make sure you're not attacked, walking to avoid possible imposterous cabs. Sounds like you've checked into a Diet & Aerobics place, South American style.

I may have missed this, but who is conducting you? If it's ___, this may be your perfect chance to get rid of him. JUST KIDDING!!!!

Aren't we collectively waiting on tenterhooks for the news on the local pastries? Curious to know if there's a branch of "Crema Crujiente" to wash down the buen bife porteńo?? I too am setting off for a jungle tour of sorts tomorrow, leaving for LA and SF, returning on the 9th, we'll compare notes.

Re: South America
Guys! This has nothing to do with your SA trip, but the CSO latest calender arrived and the chamber events look better than the orchestral offerings as far as I'm concerned. I only wish the Sharp/Balderston sextet was playing Brahms instead of Mozart works. Still, there are a few programs that could definitely lure me out there again. If you survive this trip, I mean.

I probably won't be losing weight, because I brought a lot of food with me. Oh well.
Last night I went with some colleagues to a Brazillian barbeque restaurant where they serve you broiled meats on skewers until you burst, or turn over your little coaster.
I had actually been to one very similar in New York a couple of years ago.

The rehearsal today, yes with _________, was just wonderful.
Four stands of cellos were lined up like in a firing squad on a riser, straight across. the stage. Once again, there's very little (which, I guess, is better than no) room to play, but we're still expected to do our best.
Ah, the price of fame.

Concert tonight is Mozart Piano Concerto no. 25 (with DB at the piano) and Mahler 1, with Mendelssohn Midsummer Night's Dream Scherzo for an encore. The first flutist keeps having to stop to ask DB to do it faster, because he can't breathe enough if it's too slow (which, of course, it is).

Tomorrow, on to Sau Paulo.
David

Rio
So far so good. No major illnesses or muggings. Rio IS beautiful, but the poverty was indeed quite apparent as noted by my colleague.

Sao Paulo is suppoed to be the most dangerous of towns on our tour. I´m glad I need to practice. I´ll stay inside during the siege`.

Sorry to observe BA still being pelted in other threads. That´s right you guys. OUT WITH THE OLD. IN WITH THE NEW!! DON`T TRUST ANYONE OVER 30!! Such tired old phrases from such allegedly young and open minds. There´s nothing more stale and irritating than youthful arrogance. (ie.tell Bernie to get a grip.)Hang in there, BA and others of his ilk

I guess ilk aren't in season...
Fine- I'll just wait here patiently while the other ilk are out partying in Rio...

Got the xeroxes yesterday, Gary. Many thanks- very cool photos of Heifetz and Feuermann which I had never seen.

Also got a flyer for a very interesting concert of the Frederick Stock concerto by a one Mr. Stucka! It includes a very nice picture of him. After all the old threads about Mr. Stucka's great height, huge..umm..sound, and facial hair I had for some reason somewhat expected him to look rather crazed and disheveled. I don't know why- perhaps because the closest friend of mine who is a record fanatic looks more than a little bit like the unibomber... In any case I must report that our friend Gary Stucka was quite well groomed and well...sheveled. (at least in the picture!)Sorry I won't be in Chicago for the concert, but for those who are- Sunday October 22, 3pm, info- 847-925-6100.

(And all I ask is 20% of the fee and a SMALL monthly retainer)

No, we would never do anything as unprofessional as hiss at a conductor. There is a lot of muttering under one´s breath from time to time.

Last nightt´s concert was very interesting. The Mahler 1st was abot 30% faster than it has been before, especially the 2nd movement and parts of the last. It was a nice change. Tonight will probably go back to dragging.
The Mendelssohn Scherzo was about as fast as I´ve ever heard it, and had the clarinets a bit upset.
On to Sao Paulo.

An ivory tickler indeed. I hope you got it. Maybe Ellen will explain.
Anyway, we're in Sao Paulo, and unfortunately, within about an hour, one of our violinists was robbed of about $100, within blocks of the hotel. I think it's probably because he's one of our most stylish dressers.
It's a lovely hotel, but one has to be incredibly careful.
I walked about 30 minutes to the internet cafe I'm in now. Gary, who is getting some huge fee for his Stock concerto, can afford to use the internet service in the hotel. (Just kidding.)
I wasn't robbed on the way to the cafe, but now I have to walk back. Wish me luck.
Concert tonight is a repeat of last night. Hopefully the tempos will be just as fast, but I'm not holding my breath.

Sao Paulo
3rd largest city in the world and we´re staying at perhaps the poshest hotel I´ve personally ever seen. The hall where we are playing is most impressive, sonically, and dining on this whole tour has been amazing and endless: I´ll be a stockier Stock performer!!

I´ve observed David´s remark about my fee for the Stock Concerto with amusement. All I can say is that I´m just trying to keep up in my own miniature way with his MASSIVE seniority increments on his CSO checks---which also pale in comparison to his book business profits! (just kidding) OK, back to practicing for me!! :>)

MASSIVE seniority increments. Right. Massive profits from my book business. Don´t I wish.
Gary´s right about the hotel. It is wonderful.
Tonight, after the Mahler 7th concert, Barenboim is hosting a party of Arab food at the hotel, catered, I hear, by a great restaurant.
I haven´t gone to the last few of his parties, but this one I might, mostly because I don´t want to go out of the hotel at night!
Today I found another internet cafe that is about 6 blocks closer than the one I went to yesterday. It´s actually a book store, coffee shop, and throughtout the kind of beat-up store with metal shelves full of paperbacks, are several computers. Same bargain rate of 8 reals per hour.
Two more days and off to Buenos Aires, where maybe we´ll feel a bit safer.
Tomorrow´s another rehearsal and concert.
More later.
David
