how to ship a cello
I need to get a cello from Cincinnati to Baltimore. I'm in Baltimore, the cello's in Cincinnati. I would like to avoid making the 30+ hour bus trip to pick it up myself, so how does one ship a cello?

I have a BAM travel case which I could send emtpy to Cincinnati, but people also have told me that violin shops might be helpful. Does anyone know what a violin shop would say if I asked them to ship a cello for me? (how much would it cost?)

I believe http://www.cellos2go.com/ offers flight cases for rental. Maybe Ellen G. can fill you in on the details, or other shipping methods.

Re: how to ship a cello
George,
In the recent past I shiped cellos back and forth with Ellen G. She had a nice cardboard box that was pretty rigid. She shipped the cello in a hard case, inside the cardboard box, filled with packing peanuts. They arrived back and forth in fine condition. Having shipped cases to her without a cello in them, the cost via UPS would be about $10.-$15.,depends on the distance. With the cello on board she chose to go with Fed-X, which is probably the best carrier as far as handling your package with some care. The cost will be considerably more than UPS, but I don't think anyone else will come close when it comes to being careful with it. Ellen also has these neat stickers she uses on the boxes like delicate instrument, fragile, etc.,etc.. Perhaps you can find a similar box at a moving company or such. Anyway, I found this system to work well!
Good luck whatever way you go.

Len
PS One word of warning: Stay away from MailBoxes Etc.
You will end up paying through the nose for their sevices. Instead deal directly with the carriers and same yourself some money!!
