adult beginners self learning kit
Can anyone recommend an adult beginners self learning kit (book/cd etc). As in Australia, there must be people in the USA who would like to learn but don't have easy access to a teacher due to distance. I thought a book with an accompanying CD or tape would be good so I can at least try to dtermine if the sound is anywhere near correct!

Re: adult beginners self learning kit
We are simply going to have to get started with a little videocam mounted on the computer monitor or however they do it, and find someone able to give internet lessons like I think Zuckerman does on violin. Hee hee.

In the scheme of things, I am wondering whether it is more critical for you to be able to see what someone on video is doing right, or for them to see what you are doing wrong. Probably the latter.

Hang in there, Wayne. In the alternative, you could come to the US, grab a cello and some lessons and make a vacation of it. Well, it was a thought....

Cello plus one
Wayne, I believe there exists a CD series called Cello plus one or it could be minus one, whereby you play along on the cello following music of a symphony or other. It's worth looking into, but would be too difficult for a beginner with no orchestra experience however.
Good luck!

Re: adult beginners self learning kit
Hi Wayne,

I am 39 and start learning cello for 3 months. I feel very much "at home" with my cello now compared to when I started. I think in the establishment phase having a good teacher is crucial. Reading Laura Witcher's topic below about teaching adult beginners will help you get the idea. However, I also believe we can learn by ourself. I also prepare when my teacher will leave Bangkok to continue his soloist career abroard. I plan to buy some books for self study. Others on this board may have some comments on these books.

Art of Cello Playing by Potter
The Art of Cello Teacher by Gordon Epperson
Dr. Dowing's tecnique doctor books on cello

Oh, also buy a chromatic tuner. It helps with the intonation.
Good luck
