opera!
So I went to see Don Giovanni at the
MET on Friday night and for the first time I noticed that during
Zerlina's aria "Batti batti" there is a very challenging cello part.
Funny how studying the cello makes me notice all these things to
which before I was totally oblivious. Yesterday I was giving a look
at the piano score (my other half used to study voice) and noticed
that I could play some of Don G or Leporello arias all in first
position. I haven't tried yet, but I think this afternoon I will try
to play "Deh vieni alla finestra". But I wanted to ask you guys if
you know of any collection of opera arias arranged for cello. I
think being able to play that stuff would make me the happiest
fellow on earth

Re:

Castelnuovo-Tedesco did a really fun
arrangment of the Figaro Aria of Rossini for cello and piano. I
believe Starker plays it.
One of the hardest things in the
cello solo in Don Giavonni is to keep with a singer who is very free
with rhythm.

Re:

"Batti Batti" is outstanding, I
agree.
I don't know offhand any opera arrangements for just
cello, Rosario, but if you have some friends.... The Last Resort
Music series has "Music for Three - Opera Favorites". The Part 1 can
be played by violin, flute or oboe. Part 2 can be played by the same
three instruments (key of C) or there's a volume for viola in alto
clef, or Bb clarinet. You get to play part 3, obviously, and there
is a keyboard/guitar volume. While "Batti batti" isn't among the
selections, there are pieces from Carmen, Aida, La Boheme, Don G
("Vedrai, carino) Magic Flute, Madame Butterfly, La Traviata, Tosca,
Tannhauser, Rigoletto and more. If you want more information about
what the cello part entails, let me know.
I am a fan of the
Gardiner/Mozart operas and was so thrilled to be able to add the
video of "Cosi Fan Tutti" to the "Figaro" I have. It took over a
year to locate that darn video!!!!

Re:

oohh oohh ... Figaro's aria as
played by Starker huh? I think I will wait a little bit for that
As
planned, I played "Deh vieni" this evening. The actual aria is in
D-major but there is one point in which one has to switch to 4th
position. That wouldn't be a problem, except that it's in a "fast"
passage just for a 1/8-note E. So I transposed it down to G-major
and it's great. I even copied it on music paper (it's hard to keep
those bound volumes of opera arias open on the music stand). I think
I am going to surprise my teacher on wednesday
Ellen, as for the "Opera favorites". I still haven't found
partners to play with. Besides I really want to play the melodic
line of the aria (yes I am a primadonna rather than
the accompaniment. But once I find people to play with, I think I am
going to order the music you suggested anyway.
I was looking
at other arias I could play (slow ones Paul!!! not Figaro!!!! ) but I saw a
5-flat key signature and I had a panic attack which caused me to
close the book and put it away

cello
at the opera
Oooooooops! I
wandered into the wrong room!
Before I roll out o' here, let
me share --
Franz Danzi made cello duet arrangements of
several of Mozart's arias; a few from each of the big hit operas.
They are a little hard, but not so much as C-T's witty arrangement
of Rossini!! I think the duets are still in print.
See you on
the other board!
Cheers,
Zambo

Re:

I just ordered a collection from
Shar - "Cello Solos from Opera and Ballet" edited by Morganstern. It
says selected pieces by Bizet, Donizetti, Mozart, Pucini,
Tchaikovsky, Verdi and others. International edition. It hasn't
arrived yet so I can't comment on what's really in it or the
relative difficulty. If you like, I can report on it once it
arrives.

Re:

yes please let us know. Although
from the title it sounds like cello excerpts from opera (like the
prelude to the aria "Ella giammai mi amo'" in Verdi's Don Carlo).
