Help! Buying a cello.
HI. I have been a piano and harp teacher for 12 years and have decided to learn the cello. Fun but I have no idea what to look for in a cello. Carved, laminated, factory. . . You get the idea. I would like to stay under 1500 if that is possible for a good instrument but if neccessary I will pay more. My concerns are tone, workmanship, and hopefully something that I can use forever for my own pleasure (I'm not interested in performing).

I appreciate any help. Thanks.

Start at www.cellos2go.com. As you'll see from other comments on this board, a lot of us have had excellent, personalized service from them.

Best cello outfit under $1500
I've played cello off and on for over 30 years and currently play in a community orchestra. I recently decided to treat myself to a better instrument, but I felt I needed to limit myself to the absolute minimum needed to get a good cello outfit. After months and months of research, I purchased a fantastic cello, a pretty good bow, and an okay hard case for under $1500 (including S/H) -- all through the internet.

Cello. I purchased the Artist Cello from StringWorks.com. It's a wonderful cello in appearance and sound. (See other posts in this board for more detail). Service is also outstanding. Cost: about $1150 including S/H. www.stringworks.com

Bow. After studying posts on this board and Maestronet, I decided on the Glasser Composite cello bow. It's good value for the money. The best price I found was $103 (including S/H) from Concord Music Supplies. By the way, you may also want to purchase rosin, a dampit, and an endpin rest at the same time you purchase the bow in order to get internet prices without paying additional shipping charges. www.concordmusic.com

Hard Case. I purchased one of the Travelite TL-20 hard cello cases sold through Ebay. Sometimes sellers mention the case by name; at other times, they will only refer to a lightweight cello hard case with backpack straps. High bids typically range from $100 to $170 plus S/H. I got mine for $143 including S/H.
www.ebay.com

Total cost for outfit = $1396 ($1150 + $103 + $143)

This outfit should provide you with decades of personal pleasure -- as well as delighting those who see or listen to this cello.

Hope this helps. Good luck.

Bob

Re: Best cello outfit under $1500
I am another Stringwork buyer. I bought the Artist cello but I bought the Joh. Krousch bow with it. The bow ran around $250. I'm quite pleased with it and my teacher who has played cello for 70 years is very happy with it. She enjoyed playing it, said it "spoke very well".
I just got the soft case with the cello which was not nice. It was well padded but my old soft case unzipped from one side over the top to the other so the cello could be lifted straight up out of it. The bag I got with my cello unzipped from near the endpin to partway up the side, I thought I would break the cello trying to get it in and out of the bag. I bought one of the Travelight hard cases off of ebay. I paid around $130 for it and am happy with it.
I have heard wonderful things on this board about both Stringworks and Cellos2go. I'm sure you will find something that you are happy with. In an aside, I would go for handcarved right off the bat. If you don't, you may be looking to replace what you buy within a year. I rented a student cello and was never so happy as the day my Artist came and I took my rental back to the store!

Re: Best cello outfit under $1500
Hi everyone. Thank you for the input. I have been playing on a Scherl & Roth (laminate) that I am renting until I find what I need. You definitely hear the difference between it and my teachers. Wow, what a difference! She also suggested I look into a John Juzek (I do need a 7/8 or a 3/4 given my height - or lack there of) any comments or suggestions? Is new or used better?

Thanks again,
Davina

Invitation to be on Cello game show
Game show host: Lisa and Bob, you are our first contestants on "Best Cello Outfit Under $1500 including S/H." The purpose of the game is to identify the best value for a cello, bow, and bag/case that costs less than $1500. It was determined back stage by a flip of a coin that Bob would go first. Bob, what is your selection?

Bob: I choose StringWorks Artist Cello, Glasser Composite Bow, and Travelite TL-20 hard cello case.

Game show host: Let's see what the total cost is. <Pause followed by flashing green lights.> The computer shows your total is $1396 -- well under the $1500 limit. Good job. OK, Lisa, it's now your turn.

Lisa: Bob made some good selections. I also really like the StringWorks Artist Cello. The Travelite Tl-20 is a good hard case for the money. However, I choose the Krausch bow by StringWorks.

Game Show Host: Let's see what the total cost is. <Pause followed by flashing red lights.> The computer shows that your total outfit cost was at least $1535. Oh, I'm so sorry, Lisa. You are slightly over the limit. Congratulations, Bob.

Bob: I almost chose the same bow as Lisa. Her bow is real pernambuco and backed by StringWorks. It sells for only $255 and was one of my three bow finalists. Her Krausch bow is probably better than mine, but I easily kept under the $1500 ceiling by choosing the composite at less than half the cost of the pernambuco.

Game show host: (Inanely, but with great enthusiasm) Yes, you did!

Game show host (turning to audience): Thanks for joining us. Until next time, may your wolf be tamed and your notes in tune.

Announcer's voice: If you're visiting the Internet Cello Society and would like to play, please post your selections in this discussion thread. Remember that the total cost of your cello, bow, and bag/case must include any applicable shipping and handling charges. OK, who will be our next contestant on "Best Cello Outfit under $1500?"

Re: Carved?
Is the Artist cello hand-carved solid wood?

Yes, Artist Cello is hand carved
From the StringWorks site:

"[T]hey are rough hand-carved and shaped in Germany."
(Todd French, 21 March 2000, Discussion pages)

"Artist Cellos (3/4 - 4/4) - Solid carved, highly flamed maple back, sides, and neck, solid carved medium grain German spruce top, lightly antiqued varnish, solid highest quality ebony fittings, inlaid purfling, D'Addario Helicore strings."
(Artist Cello page)
