Greenhouse
Hi everybody!
I just saw a
video of a concert given during the International Cello Encounter we
had this year at Rio de Janeiro, and that I couldn't attend, to my
great sadness.
The concert was Bachianas Brasileiras nº5,
with an ensemble formed by the teachers of the festival, the most
important among them being certainly Bernard Greenhouse. I didn't
recognize the soprano.
But let me tell you about Greenhouse
(as if you didn't know already). The camera was closed on him most
of the time, and I got a realy good look of his playing. Fantastic
expression! And what a perfect accompanist!! He followed the soprano
perfectly, even with the same vibrato! I may not have a gigantic
chamber music experience, but I believe I know the value of a good
accompanist, and how hard it can be to follow someone expressively
without jumping in front of that person's solo. I was amazed.
Obviously, during his solos, he was above everyone else, and I don't
mean volume. He played with great elegance and simplicity, as I
think the piece asks.
I really wish I could have been there,
and maybe played in that cello orchestra - a friend of mine went to
that festival, and there he was, a ninth cello in the
ensemble.
Anyway, just saying Greenhouse is a great cellist
again.
All the best, Guilherme

Re:
Greenhouse
I doubt you'll get any argument from
any knowledgeable cellist. Greenhouse was never a cello superstar,
as he chose the career path of longevity, consistency, and chamber
music. But note-for-note, he produced some of the most beautiful
cello playing ever heard in the 20th century. Even now, at age 85,
he held us all spellbound with his Cant del ocells at the Cello
Congress. A true artist.

Just another example of how music
reverses, or at least slows down, time. When I spoke to Mr.
Greenhouse at the Congress reception, he certainly didn't act 85! He
is hilarious, kind, and a phenomenal cellist. I know those of us in
the mass ensemble had trouble concentrating on our own music when he
was playing the Casals piece.

He's one of my cello heroes. I have
always been impressed by how expressive he is, without being
sensational, ifyanowhadamean. Very elegant and "pure." The original
Beaux Arts just can't be beat IMHO.
