Engelhardt cello prices
Could someone please direct me to a
website where I could see a price list for Engelhardt cellos? I
realize there has been some discussion as to it's tonal qualities
but am interested all the same.

I think Discount Strings carries
them: www.discountstrings.com/index.html
I
own one, sort of inherited, and while it's not the worst thing I've
ever heard, it's only plus is probably a relatively robust
construction that might appeal to schools.
Unless they've
changed, assume the endpin will be too short and need replacement.
The neck is fatter and wider than many instruments which makes
picking up another and playing it a bit tedious, as I discovered
recently trying to play my teacher's. On the one I have, the lower
bout is approximately 18 1/2 inches wide which will not fit some
hard cases. This could mean a hard case to fit it might cost more
than the instrument.
I guess that pretty much covers my words
of encouragement
Dave, contemplating buying a better instrument in the not
too distant future.

Re:
Engelhardt cello prices
I purchased one brand new four years
ago from an outfit in Clearwater, Florida. It took six months to get
it, because there is a large backlog of orders. The list price was
$1,500.00, which I didn't beleive was true. On the other board a
young lady is considering paying $2,500.00 for a used one. I payed
$651.00, and thats about all there worth in my opinion. The sound is
so so, but the playability is not very good. Where the neck joins
the body there is an extra amount of wood that I think is for added
strength, but it interups the position of your hand when your in the
fourth position. Also as was stated, the neck is thicker and wider,
and that wont help you get used to the finer caved necks of better
instruments. All in all, it's a good student cello, but it's
overpriced, and you really can do so much better for the same
money!

Re:

Good Morning, thanks Ellen, I do
have an4/4 Englehardt "Concert Model",( well flamed laminated) cello
to sell because I have upgraded with Cellos 2 Go. I did put in a
longer ,stiffer end pin and thanks to some advice I had from Ernie,
(a fellow ICS board poster), I removed just enough wood from the
heel of the neck to make playing there easier, but not weaken the
neck. I have a heavy duty soft case and bow to go with it and I
promise you that the price is right for what the cello is: a durable
beginner instrument for an adult. I played it for over two years,
taking lessons part of the time, took it back and forth to work
almost everyday so that I could practice on my break time, it has
served me well. If you are still interested, me E-mail is in the
post above....Sincerely...Bill

Engelhardt
The story is this: I recently found
an Engelhardt cello in a Pawn Shop. It appears in good condition
with a soft case and what appears to be a fiberglass "Glasser" bow.
The shop was asking $690.00 Canadian. Having been on the Engelhardt
site I see that the Maestro to Student to Economy model differ in
price. I was contemplating buying it and selling it actually. (The
pawn shop is in fiddle country where a cello would be far too big to
go under the chin.)
Regarding cello makers; I play a 1791
Saxonny cello but have yet been able to decipher the Luthier's
signature or track him down. Is there an instrument maker /Luthier
bulletin board on this site now? I have had a two year hiatus and am
back on line and am pleased with the new and better organization of
the site. Bravo Monsieur Michel!
