Engelhardt Cellos 4/4 - what is anyones opinion ?
Hi, I am 14 years old and have
been playing a 4/4 Erich Pfretzschner 1990 Hand made copy of
Antonius Stradivarius for the past 2 years.
I have found a
different Cello that I would like to have my parents buy. But I
don't know if it is worth it.
The Cello I have found is an
Engelhardt 4/4 and is in excellent condition. About 6 months
old. Lots of Flame Wood on the Ribs and back.
The owner of
the Cello is wanting $2500.00 for it.
Can anyone tell me if
this Cello is really worth this kind of money ? I am really going to
have to try and convince my parents.
Help
Please Thank-You Amber

You can find a considerably better
cello for that money. The cello in question is a laminated model and
the pretty wood you see on the exterior is only one layer deep, the
rest is made up of two additional plys of lower grade wood. You
would be paying more than twice what the cello is worth, maybe
moretalking to Stringworks or Cellos 2 Go. Eather shop will get you
much more cello for your money, and it will. I purchased one four
years ago from a mail order company for $651.00. If your ready to
spend that kind of money, consider be a solid carved wood
cello! Best Wishes,

Amber, Sorry that my post reads
so strange. My computor did something weird, and the post is
somewhat out of the order that I typed it in, but I think you get
the idea!

The Autumn 2000 Discount Strings
mail order catalog shows the Englehardt Model 55 for $579 new, the
Model 110 for $649 (US dollars) and that includes a
bottom-of-the-line fiberglass bow and a vinyl bag.
So unless
they have better models (there should be a label visible looking in
through the F-holes) you need to get a $2000 bow thrown in free with
that $2500 Engelhardt to have a good deal .

From what I have been told,
Engelhardt cellos are simply not worth it. I would second Len's
suggestion to talk to Todd at Stringworks (www.stringworks.com) or
Ellen at Cellos2Go (www.cellos2go.com)

The Pfretzschner is almost certainly
a better cello than the Engelhardt. Stay away.
As everyone
else has said, you can do much better for much less money. I can't
believe someone is trying to sell that for $2500!! That's just
absurd. Good luck on your search!
