So I
drove over my cello...
Yes, really. Sort of.
Hectic
morning - the kid woke up early screaming, my brain is still half
addled from painting yesterday, and the phone kept ringing while I
was trying to get out of the house to rehearsal. I finally get out
to the car, and discover a ton of junk in the back seat, so I put my
cello down, empty out the car, get in the car, and proceed to back
up over my cello. There's a ton of junk in our driveway from the
renovation we're doing on our kitchen, so I just figure I've driven
over a board or something, till I realize there's no cello in the
back seat. I get out, and sure enough, the cello is sticking out
from the bottom of the car, the case top bashed in really nicely. So
I very carefully pull forward, and carefully open the case, and
fortunately the cello is fine. The case is pretty bashed up,
however, but I was able to get it back to normal shape, so if you
ignore the tire mark on the top, you can't tell that anything has
happened.
I guess this could have been pretty tragic, but
instead it's just funny. Do I get the clutz of the year award or
what? Maybe I can wangle a nice new accord case (to go with my honda
accord) out of this...
Kids, I'm a professional. Don't try
this at home.

you're so lucky nothing happened to
the cello...I would probably have started bawling or something, even
before I saw if any damage had been done...oh my god...don't
worry...I'm not trying that one at home...

A Met violist did this to his viola
years ago and I've seen the pix....pretty amazing flapjack.
Excellent firewood, burns longer than a violin. I just finished
painting my bathroom, and my head is reeling, I FEEL YOUR
PAIN.

Wow! Glad the cello is fine. You
should get a big endorsement contract with the case
company.
Now from time to time we must ask you if you've run
across any good cellos!

Re: So

See, I've been telling you guys
those hatchtops are monsters. And well worth the extra weight, isn't
it Steve?
I was once getting ready for an out of town gig in
an even littler town north of my own. The husband was tagging along
- this was in those newly married days when he still pretended to be
interested in my kind of music. He was washing the car as I was
getting dressed. He went to pull into the garage and ran over what
he thought was the hose, first with the front tire, then the back.
Having parked the car, he went back out to the driveway to put away
the hose only to discover it wasn't the hose he ran over, but the
dog's foot. The dog was still sitting on the driveway with big tire
tread marks on one foot. My husband came running into the house
yelling "I've run over Barney! You'll have to go by yourself, I'm
taking him to the vet!" He ran back out of the house to find the dog
halfway down the block prancing around with some neighbor kids.
Absolutely no damage.

No
Damage
When I was about 4 -5 years old I
was sitting in the back seat of my parents' AMC Rambler. We came
home from grocery shopping and as my mother slowly drove down a long
driveway I saw my older brother playing baseball with some friends.
I was so anxious to join them that I jumped out to the rolled-down
window. Then next thing I remember was seeing a huge black tire
rolling over my leg. Boy was I scared!
My mom thought she
drove over some of the fallen crab-apples from a tree in the back
yard. She found me sitting there crying and ran over to me,
mortified.
But after having a doctor look at me, I was just
up and running around again like nothing had happened. I don't even
think I remember any pain.
Running over a dog or a cello, a
little boy...someone had to be looking out for us all!

To complete the record, is it the
Volvo 850 or the Honda accord that ran over the bluejay?

Re: So

The honda, which is very light in
the back. I don't think that made much difference in this case -
it's still around 500-800 lbs of weight back there. The volvo is a
bit heavier, but has more clearance.
I'm surprised people
are keeping track of these things - for the record, I traded in the
volvo for the honda. Trying to eliminate debts in the interest of my
new kid and all. Babies tend to suck up all available dollars being
earned, without having to deal with car payments, large mortgages,
etc. I also traded down into a smaller house.
