I'm corrupting impressionable young children!
[Background: Last year I was shopping for a cello. (I purchased a wonderful instrument early this year). In October '99 there was a Butterfield's auction, a Cremona exhibit, and an American makers' exhibit in LA on the same weekend, and I found a $200 coast-to-coast roundtrip fare. I stayed with my cousin Ralph, who has two daughters, one of whom was just starting violin. I took them to Butterfield's on Sunday morning to show them the instruments, and played on some of them while my young cousins listened. Here is a letter from my cousin, to my father. (Posted here with permission).]

Uncle Al,

I need to talk to you about what a bad influence your son is. We're now shelling out an extra $39 per month for a cello. Mike made an influence on Sallia. I tried explaining the virtues of the violin, it's cheaper and it's a lot more portable, but apparently Mike's playing Greensleeves impressed Sallia (it sounded pretty) and you can't play the theme from Jaws on a violin as well, and besides, she really wants the bass, but even she admits that's too big for her.

Ralph
