Carter
Brey Cello/Piano Duel in DC
Carter Brey & Christopher
O'Riley gave a recital this past Wednesday at the Coolidge
Auditorium. The program was Beethoven's 12 Variations on "Ein
Madchen oder Weibchen," Beethoven Sonata in C, Op. 12, No. 1, and
the Debussy and Poulenc Sonatas. Immediately after the variations, I
moved from my seat against the left wall to a seat nearer to the
aisle, because to my immense surprise, the piano was totally
overpowering the cello. I know this is a common problem with
cello/piano, but did not expect it with this duo. According to the
review, the problem was fixed for the rest of the program, but I
thought the piano continued to obscure the cello's passagework
throughout the recital. My neighbor was griping too.
Does
this happen all the time?
Carter Brey is an absolute cello
monster. Awesome! He also gave a master class earlier in the day,
and used a lot of imagery to convey musical ideas to the kids (a
woman sweeping down a staircase to meet her date, a couple smooching
behind a barn, and opening different drawers in a chest to reveal
different contrapuntal lines). It was fun.

Re:

Funny to hear this, since Chris is
hardly a banger, and they've played together for a long time. I have
a tape of a recital they played some 10 years ago which is quite
well balanced...and I confess that Carter's sliding all over the
place in the Chopin sonata is hardly to my taste. I think he plays
quite differently now. But that Guad of his should sound cannon-like
in the first few rows. I heard him 2 years ago in a Tchaik Souvenir
de Florence, and Rafi Figueroa also said that from the stage Carter
sounded overwhelmingly loud...but from my seat I could hardly hear
him.
