The PPE
board
I think I've stopped by the PPE
board once in my life before today, but for whatever reason I
wandered in. I wish the thread about "coaching my daughter" were on
this board. Perhaps the pros prefer having just professional input
into a teaching dilemma, but I think the post encompasses more than
just that. Can it be moved over here? That way we can stay out of
your room, but still work with the premise here. Maybe it only
interests me, in which case never mind.

I still think it should be one
board.

Re: The

Yes! One board! I've lurked a few
times on the CBN board and have thought on those times that there
are topics which I would love to participate in, but don't feel
quite right about it. I know people have told me to post anyway, but
why not just have the single board, in that case? I don't understand
why people cannot merely self-censor their reading of posts that
bother them - there are many on this board which I skip. All for one
and one for all!

Re: The
PPE board
I actually like the multiple boards
as it allows me to read just a portion of the discussion and then
mark that section read. Otherwise I'd have a hard time keeping track
of what I read and what I don't read.
But I would like it if
the different boards were organized by topics and not by groups who
were allowed to post. For example, teaching could be on a separate
board and discussions such as "adult beginners" (from the CBN board)
and "coaching" from the PPE board could be on a common board, open
to anyone who wanted to contribute.

Re: The
PPE board
I see what you're saying, but as you
know, a post can touch upon many areas. That's exactly what happened
with this one that caught my eye. It not only deals with teaching
which is what caused it to be placed on the PPE board. It deals with
parents of students, how some parents push, students themselves and
how their goals are formed, the way they are taught, the rationales
as well as possible downfalls to some people's teaching
philosophies. There is a lot of merit to points brought up that I
had not considered previously.
Many of us students tend to
have one teacher we stick with for a long time. Therefore we don't
get anyone else's slant on teaching. I have learned scads from ICS
and there are a few people on the Board I would love to study with.
Likewise there are teachers who have taught one method or one style
and are possibly unaware of the effects they are having on students.
It is the exchange of ideas that is so valuable and enlightening. I
just thought it made for interesting reading, possible discussion,
and I still wish it was on this board.
I can think of any
number of exercises I've spent time on that prepared me for
orchestral and chamber playing. And I can think of others that made
sense in the context of a book they were in, but no place else.
Different perspectives -- none necessarily right or wrong, worse or
better. Depends what you're looking for, and I think this could help
a lot of people broaden their horizons. E

Hmmm. This is very interesting. I
would love to read that discussion, maybe I will (if I can overcome
the temptation to respond). As far as what I've encountered so far
in my cello studies (which is a little under a year. 18 days under a
year, to be exact) my teacher has already briefly discussed with me
what Ellen brought to this board. She told me that she can only
teach me to a certain level, and that after that she knows that
she'll have nothing left to teach me, and I'll have to find a new
teacher. So I know that I won't be spending years and years with
only one viewpoint on playing. My horizons will expand.
I
know that this probably hasn't even scratched the surface of what's
been posted at PPE, but I thought I should respond.
