Non-conservatory training
(Apologies for the re-post
here...but no one ever reads the College Cellists board and I want
answers!)I guess the future is NOW. I never thought I'd be doing
this for real, but my serious college search is starting. I realized
that other than Indiana and Northwestern, I don't know of any
non-conservatory colleges with a strong music program. I want to
ultimately go to a conservatory, but perhaps not as an
undergraduate. What schools have good progams/cello teachers?

1st and foremost, find a teacher you
want to study with. Universities with well-reputed music schools
that come to mind include Michigan, Minnesota, USC, plus there must
be lots in the east.

Definitely check out Ithaca College
-- www.ithaca.edu , I'm pretty sure. Anyway, it's a liberal arts
college with a very strong music school. It started out as a
conservatory, actually, and then expanded into a college. Sorry, we
haven't got a cello web page up, but it's in the works, slowely.
Anyway, you get a very good education here, and you work very hard.
We have a strong orchestra, a good atmosphere and a truly great
teacher. It's what they call a "teaching college"-- emphasis on
hiring good full-time teachers who want to teach. Anyway, I'll
stop plugging now, and if you want me to say more you can always
email me.

Re:

ok.... time to plug Lawrence agian
:-) It is a very strong academic school which also happens to have a
very good conservatory. The orchestra has an AMAZING (no... really,
its not an oxymoron :-))conductor.... Ms. Anthony is a great cellist
and a wonderfull teacher, and you would find the cello studio to be
very friendly and easy to get along with. I'll stop now, but you can
e-mail me at : cello_man@yahoo.com if you wish. -42
