Wheels on cases
Is there any way to put wheels on cases? I have one of those DREDFULLY heavy SKB cases, and it has no wheels, which would be REALLY nice...
Thanks

Re: Wheels on cases
I had wheels put on my old hard case; they didn't really help. They had to be put on - because of the hinges - on the side which put the curved front part of the case against my right leg while I was lugging it. I'm thinking I could have probably explained that better but anyway if I dragged it on my left side I got more tired - my left side is not my strong side.

Save the money for the wheels and get a good thick padded soft case and put your cello on your back. My old hard case makes for good storage in my house.

Re: Wheels on cases
I have difficulty with the usefulness of wheels on cases. While I can see their use if one is travelling and going over smooth surfaces, such as in airports, but I have a hard time seeing their utility on uneven surfaces. The bouncing and jostling that the cello would receive, as the wheels pass over bumps, cannot be good for the setup of the cello.

Re: Wheels on cases
I think my philosophy toward wheels has changed over the years. I have a bam voyager case, and i barely use the wheels, i just carry it by the handle or with the backpack straps. I always wanted to get a stevenson case, but now i think it's more sensible to get one of those ultralight cases, such as the Accord which doesn't have wheels. It's superlight only about 5-6lbs. and relatively compact. The rational would probably be that if you threw any case down a flight of stairs or something, the cello would be damaged regardless of what case you used. I kinda got off on a tangent, i apologize.

Did you ever try using a foldable luggage carrier to carry your cello? I've seen some people do this, and it might work out for you. Kolstein does sell some stroller wheels to add to cases, but i'm not sure they'll fit on an SKB case and they're kind of expensive. Hope this helps.

SKB with wheels
I have one of the new SKB shells with wheels. It works OK. But I think wheels are really a bad idea, unless you are on a very smooth surface. Too many bumbs and jostles on the cello. I use my cushy soft bag most of the time, and put my cello in the hard case only when it will be traveling and bumping other instruments or luggage.
