Alternative to surgical tubing and thumbcushions
I happened to see "Pencil grippers"
at the drugstore and bought a package of 6 for about $1.50. They are
the size and shape of thumbcushions and could be used exactly the
same way, but I cut them into slices to use in that little space
between the frog and the leather grip on my bow. Perfect and cheap.
They wear out a little quicker than slices of thumbcushion but are
easy to replace and cost much less.

Great idea, Bobbie! And, they come
in fun colors too, if you're into more than basic
black!

I am currently using a black rubber
pipe band someone suggested I try. He likes them a lot... I was
kind of used to the surgical tubing (softer... but I DO hate when
they get to that gooey consistancy in hot humid
weather...)
Just adding the pipe band to the list...

I've been using those lately in leu
of surgical tubing-- (I never seem to have quite enough time to
order some online, and then I lose the link, and now I'm too
embarrassed to ask what the address is again...), unfortunatly, with
my playing schedule, they wear out in about 4 days. They're cheap,
but still...

Well, since it was given to me, my
explanation may not be great, but it is a black hard rubber tube...
about a cm long. I think they are used as some sort of mouth
piece for smoking pipes... probably found at tobacco shops... But
I didn't buy it... The guy who rehaired my bow put it on,
suggesting I try it as an alternative to surgical tubing. A
colleague in the orchestra loves them and has also suggested
them. So far, I find that I miss the slightly softer feel of the
surgical tubing... BUT... I have a feeling this rubber won't break
up into goo the way surgical tubing seems to over time.
