Polishes
Does anyone have experience with the polishes available at the instrument stores. I am worried about hurting the varnish. Thanks.

Re: Polishes
I have always heard/been advised that the best thing to do is just to wipe down your cello after playing with a clean, soft cloth. My husband's old undershirts work great! If the cello has a lot of rosin or soil of any kind on it, you may want to leave the cleaning to a luthier. I've heard that some polishes will hurt the varnish.

Re: Polishes
Some polishes may hurt some varnishes. In my experience, the chances of this happening are rather rare. Most everything sold by reputable shops will be pretty benign. I know, for instance, that we test every new batch of polish before we release it for sale. However, the best polish is the one you don't have to use because you keep your instrument and bow wiped down with a clean, dort, dry cloth on a regular basis. If you find that a polish is in order, always try it in an out-of-the-way spot in the instrument just to see what happens. If your instrument is growing barnacles, it is best to take it into the shop for a professional cleaning. The price of the lesson will serve as good incentive to keep it clean after that. :-)
