Helicore strings
It seems impossible but .... more
about strings! Althought the two Helicore/D'Addario (rope)
strings sound incredibly great the two top (also rope) produce great
amount of sound but it seems of less quality, a littel bit twangy. I
don't know if will improve in the future. Because the rope core?
More convenient solid core for top strings?
Alternatives? Thanks!

Re:

I used a rope string - Pirastro
Permanents - on all four strings and didn't find the top two to be
twangy. Your cello probably doesn't like them.

Re:

My cello didn't like Helicores at
all, too brassy and twangy, so I switched to Larsens on top and
Spirocore silvers on the bottom.

Re:
Helicore strings
I have tried helicores all across,
and they sound pretty darn good on my lower two strings. However, I
have the same problem on the top two: I liked the volume and
response, but the tone was a little too metallic.
I have
also tried Permanents on the top, and they did very nicely. I
haven't yet tried the permanents on the bottom, but if I ever need
something different, they would probably be next on my list.
Larsens I find to be an especially good match on top for
Helicores on the bottom, because they both seem (at least on my
cello) to have a very smooth quality to their tone. If you are
especially interested in good response and volume, but just want a
little less twang on the upper two, you also might try the Belcanto
Golds. They may or may not work, but are anywhere I've heard them
tried, a very quick, brilliant string.
I also like the
Obligato upper two. I actually like the whole Obligato set, once it
breaks in (IF it breaks in). But, on the lower two, the response
isn't as good. The upper two might also be a nice match for
helicores on the bottom.

Re:

lblake, interesting that you
mentioned the combo of Larsen on the A&D, Helicore on the
G&C. That is what I use, and my cello seems to like it. My
friend's cello does wonderfully on the Belcanto Gold, mine not so
well. I think (was it Mary K who mentioned it?) that so much just
seems to depend on what is good for YOUR cello. The experimenting
gets a bit pricey, though!

Re:
Helicore strings
Yes, it does... Ellen at cellos2go
has a variety that I believe she sends around for testing to see if
certain strings suit your cello. Ask her about it - it's just
another great thing she does.

I used Helicores for a long
time then I tried Spirocores on the C& G and Larsens on
the A&D and found this combo superior to the Helicores on my
Cello (More Bass & sweeter top)
