string
height at the nut and to the fingerboard?
hi!
i have a pupil whose
cello strings are way too high. i have a very good set of tools to
do filing etc, so im not going to get the cello to a repairperson. i
could file the bridge lower little by little until the height is
good, but i would also like to know if there are any general
guidelines for string height. how high should the string be in the
nut, and is there some checking points (half-way harmonic?) where
the height should be measured?
sasha
p.s. for victor,
i know that your strings are high, but for an absolute beginner i
dont dare to start playing on the side of the strings...

I think if you lower the bridge, you
may also need to lower the nut... assuming the fingerboard has the
correct planed curve. Maybe that's not a valid assumption,
though...
Just keep in mind that the measurement has to allow
for the whole curve of the fully-vibrating string, end to
end.
I don't know the standard measurements, but it always
looked like a rather daunting task to me. pretty specific stuff.
Good luck!

Set the A to 1/4 inch above the
fingerboard, and the C to 5/16. Use a good bridge to trace the curve
between the two, cut off the excess. The strings at the nut should
barely clear the fingerboard. This is an oversimplification, but
it'll be better than you have now. Also, there may be too much
scoop in the board. Good luck.

Height at the nut should be 1
mm for all 4 strings height at the end of finger board sholud
be 4.5 mm for the A string and 6.5 mm for the C string

The values you quote for string
height seem a bit low to me. The more commonly quoted heights are
5.7-6.0 on the A string side and 7.0-8.0 on the C string side. A lot
will depend on the type of strings you have as well. Some of the
more flexible type of strings should have a bit more clearance as
they tend to have a wide amplitude of vibration. The clearance can
also depend on the condition of the fingerboard as well. It is
always better to be a bit on the high side than to be too low.
