Guarneri String Quartet
Yesterday was Soyer's final concert
with the Guarneri (or so the marketing material said) in Jordan Hall
in Boston. I've never heard them live before - what a treat!
They began with Mozart K. 575. Then they played Mendelssohn
No. 1 in E-flat major. I'd never heard that one before and fell in
love. The second movement (Caonzonetta: Allegretto) was absolutely
divine. They ended with Smetana's "From My Life" - again, the first
time hearing this remarkable piece.
From my balcony seat, it
was a joy to watch and hear them passing phrases from one to
another, as easily as tossing a beachball around.
I don't
know which I liked the sound of better - Tree's gorgeous viola
(Domenicus Busan, Venice, 1750) - VERY mellow and warm, not a hint
of nasal quality . . . or Soyer's splendid cello (Gugliano, Naples
1778 ) - the G and C strings are something you can get lost in, warm
& dark like melting fudge.
So glad to have been there.

Re:

Sounds like it was a great concert!
It must have been both thrilling and sad to be present at the end of
an era. The original Guarneri SQ has been such a fixture on the
quartet scene for so long. It will be interesting to see what they
move towards with the change in members. How nice that you were able
to attend...and the weather even cooperated
too!

Re:
Guarneri String Quartet
I saw them when I was a kid -- can't
remember if it was elementary school or not -- and they were in
residence at Harpur College a/k/a SUNY Binghamton. It was a school
assembly or something. I just remember it was the first time I saw a
string quartet perform. Who knew what was in store for these
musicians!!!! One of my friends from school at the time had a parent
on faculty of SUNY, and to this day she recalls her mom complaining
that Arnold spilled red wine on their white carpet. Hee hee.
On another "note," I saw Emerson yesterday, a program of
Haydn and Shostakovich. I particularly enjoyed the Haydn because
I've played those works, know them, and instead of being mesmerized
by playing so far over my head in terms of repertoire, I was able to
do basic "study" things like all the pain-in-the-neck passages with
a zillion D's strung together and see how David bowed them
musically. Or shifts that were always painfully obvious when I did
them, I saw a Plan B I'd not considered. Quite the learning
experience. I'm sure it was a walk in the park for them compared to
what they're used to performing, but it was one of the first
concerts I've attended where I actually came away with something I
could use!!

i saw
them last week!
I saw them perform at the kennedy
center in dc last week playing the same program. I thought they were
just amazing! I went to get all their autographs on a cd cover and
just as I had 3 of the signatures Micheal Tree smudged the ink on
all of the signatures!! Darn violist smudging my ink.
