LvB Sonata #2 in g
Although I'm quite sure I should be indulging in political rants and name calling...

I've been listening to Slava's complete Beethoven CD with Richter, looks like these were recorded in the 60s. The last mvmnt is played SO FAST. It kind of made me nervous just listening to it. Yes, it's exciting, a magnificent performance, but I just couldn't quite enjoy it, the way I do when it's played at a slower tempo.

Maybe it's because I play this Sonata, but nowhere near this fast. Maybe I'm just getting old - just when I thought I had attained the meaning of life, the universe, and everything.

What do all of you think? Am I a communist? No, wait, wrong post. How fast do you like the final mvmnt of sonata #2? What recordings, slower/faster do you particularly like?

Oh, yeah, and someone please tell me 42 isn't old.

As much as I love Slava's cello playing. I'm not a huge fan of his Beethvoen Recording with Richter. (Give me his Shostakovich, Prokofiev, Grieg, Miaskovsky, Kabalevesky, etc...any day though!)

My favorite recording of the Beethoven Sonatas are by Ax and Ma. I agree with your assessment of the tempi and pacing of Slava and Richter's recording. Nervous...yes, it sounds a bit that way. I like most Beethoven to be very steady and strong in pulse.

42 isn't too old, it's the ANSWER!

LVB Sonata #2
I agree with you and Paul. IMO, Mr. Rostropovich plays this movement way too fast. It's too frenetic.

I've heard him do this over & over again on different pieces. I really don't know what he's getting at. It doesn't make the music more exciting. It almost feels like a horse-race. I wouldn't call it poor taste, but it just sounds like he's clueless.

It's great that he knows how to play fast and can demonstrate it to everyone, he should save it for small showpieces like "At the Fountain".

That being said, I've also recently heard the g minor sonata as recorded by Ms. Dupre. It is positively deadly because it is *way* too slow. With this movement, I prefer too fast to too slow.

So, now that I have judged the tempi of others, just what is the correct tempo for the rondo??

Well, I have this idea in my head the Mr. Beethoven had a pulse running through him as he penned the sonata. This pulse was between 72-76 bpm. For the 1st movement adagio, try 72-76 to the eighth, for the 2nd movement allegro try 72-76 to the dotted half, and for the 3rd movement rondo try 72-76 to the quarter note.

This works for me. You may want to check with your pianist too. Mr. Richter was clearly scuffling to play the notes in the recordings. The piano part is much more difficult than the cello part. As we all know, you certainly want to keep on the good side of your accompanist. I usually tell mine to set the tempo in this sonata, then I try to push them forward.

42 doesn't sound old to me . . .
since I just turned 41. I like to remember the saying: in ten years you'll never believe you were once as young as you are now.

Re: LvB Sonata #2 in g
It has always spooked me how Rostro and Richter essay the sonatas..I never liked any of them, and I'm the biggest Slava fan on the planet after M. Tseng. Seems that there were a spate of cheesy, out-of-kilter Beethoven performances coming out of the soviet Union in those days, like they just didn't get it, which has always puzzled a large section of the music community. I always loved Gilels Beeth Concerto #3, but it seemed an anomaly. This was my feeling from many years ago; I'm intent on giving a re-listen one of these days.

Sorry Paul, I think I may be the only one to get that "Hitchiker's Guide to the Galaxy" reference. We are both big nerds. :-)
