Teaching
Do any of you, especially you older
cellists, teach private lessons? If so, how many students do you
have and what level of development are they at?

I had two students last summer. It
was a great experience, I really learned a lot from it. One was 10
years old and a lot of fun, but very hard to teach. He would always
say the cookiest things. But he came from a really really bad
teacher and he had a bunch of really bad habits. Anyway, his mom
pressured him a little too much I think, and he quit. I know it's
not my fault, but I still feel a bit guilty about that. My other
student was 16 yrs. old and also played the violin and viola. He had
a touch time with the angle of his left hand, he kept trying to play
like the violin. He caught on real fast though. Unfortunately, the
only cello he had was the one he was borrowing from the school and
they needed it back once school started again. So, we've put the
lessons on hold until he can get a cello. Are you thinking about
starting, or are you just curious?

Actually I already have a student. I
taught lessons for a year when I was in 9th grade (2 years ago), and
I recently got another student. She's a 7th grader and she's
awesome.
Everybody always says that you teach the way you
were taught. After Suzuki 2 I went straight to the suites. She just
finished book 2 but she isn't ready for Bach yet. I'm kind of stuck
on what to give her next. Her technique is pretty good. She knows up
to 4th position. She can read tenor clef. But the experience just
isn't there yet.
Do you recommend any good pieces or books
to start her on? Or should I just really push her and start her on
Bach?
Thanks, Anna

Anna,
Suzuki book 3 is pretty
good-- that's what I did-- book 1, book 2, book 3, Bach. And I
played Ashokan Farewell and some orchestra music in there, too.
Maybe your student should play in an orchestra to get some
experience... (?)
AS far as giving lessons is concerned... it
looks like I might start teaching as well. Seeing as how I just
passed math (FINALLY) which opened up two whole new study halls, my
teacher wants me to start conducting our middle school orchestra,
and also start giving lessons. Maybe I'll start learning
violin/viola/bass, too! I'm anxious for the experience, i think
it'll be a lot of fun. I love kids.
