strings
I started using Thomastik Dominant strings about 2 years ago. So far I have gone through 4 A strings. The problem is that the windings separate and either prevent smooth movement or cause a resin build up at the bridge. Any comments or suggestions?

Re: strings
A strings seem to unwind more easily than others but you're getting about 6 mths out of each string - don't know if that's so bad...how much to you play? You could try other strings to see if they last longer for you. As for playing on unraveling strings, you're probably tearing up your bow hair, too. Rosin on the bridge: You should be cleaning your instrument of rosin almost everytime you play anyway.

Hi Bryan,

You might get more response to this question on the Instrument and Equipment board, but I'll give it a shot here. I think I read your comment about preventing smooth movement differently than Dorie did, not sure which of us is getting your meaning. If Dorie understood you right this won't help, but just in case...

I thought you meant your winding is separating at the bridge, preventing smooth movement of the string over the bridge, in which case I would recommend having parchment put over the groove under the A string, or at the very least lubricating the groove with graphite from a pencil.

If this is where the winding is separating it could be that the groove in the bridge is too narrow for the string - worn from your previous strings which may have been slightly narrower than the Thomastik? I've heard of this happening at the nut (at the scroll end of the fingerboard), causing even new strings to break.

Anyone else out there play with Thomastik Dominants? How long do your A strings last?

Best wishes Bryan,
Barb
