Your
jobs & gigs...
I'm curious. What orchestra cello
sections have representatives here? Do many of you pursue other
employment interests in addition to music?

I'm in the Nashville Symphony, but
you knew that. Probably. I'm also in the Tennessee Philharmonic, and
the Bryan Symphony Orchestra, which are usually referred to around
here as the Murfreesboro and the Cookeville symphonies,
respectively.
Pursue isn't the word I'd use. Pursued by,
maybe. The symphony doesn't pay a lot, and leaves me with wierd
collections of spare time, so an ordinary part time job is almost
impossible to find. However I have found one - I deliver food for a
company called Ez2get.com. They're willing to let me schedule around
my symphony schedule.

Been with the CSO since 1986. Also
play Principal Cello with Ars Viva Chamber Orchestra and Ravinia
Festival Orchestra. Last Fall, I started teaching at Chicago Musical
College at Roosevelt University. I also play the occasional "Notes
for Bucks" and "Bowing for Dollars" gigs to provide additional
support for my recording, autograph, and opposite gender hunting
pursuits. : >)

Playing in the Los Angeles
Philharmonic for one year. (Previously in Houston Symphony for 10
years.) I'm new enough in town the I'm not yet getting many calls
for teaching, chamber music, gigs, etc., and ENJOYING it. (I do like
outside musical pursuits, but after being overloaded in Houston I
now gratefully feel like I'm on sabbatical.)

CSO since 1974. Started
Montagnana Books (montagnanabooks.com/)
in about 1989. I used to play concertos and recitals, but don't
find the need or desire these days. Still play a bit of chamber
music, mostly quartets, but not too often. The book business keeps
me rather busy.

Savannah Symphony is my full time
job - I also do quite a few wedding and church gigs. Plus chamber
music.

Delaware Symphony is my group - not
full time (and possibly getting smaller - we're in the middle of
not-very-pleasant negotiations - the musicians see the orchestra
growing and the board wants to cut (off their noses to spite their
faces)ugh - don't get me started!!!!!), so I free-lance with other
orchestras in the Philadelphia area, and I have a string quartet
that plays "gigs" and concerts, and I teach.

Hi, Laura,
I have been
Principal Cellist of the Utah Symphony since the 1975-76 season.
Taught at the U of Utah for years, although now I teach privately at
my home. Do some chamber music, recitals, and occasionaly a concerto
with the symphony. Do a summer cello festival run by fellow ICS
members Tracie Price and Francesca Rose. Used to do a lot of studio
recording of films, tv, commercials, etc., but now enjoy more free
time to practice and listen to my ever growing record/CD collection.
(With both kids now on there own, there is far less financial
pressure-college years were a major drain!)

Do you Delaware musicians have a
lawyer for negotiations? Having been through hostile negotiations
with and without I strongly suggest the lawyer. The one who helped
with our last negotiations and with a recent grievance is very good.
Email me if you'd like info.

Re:
Your jobs & gigs...
Since getting married and leaving
Baltimore, I haven't really been playing in orchestras. But while I
did, I was principal cellist of the Millbrook Orchestra in WV and
assistant principal at the Maryland Symphony.
My full time
occupation during that time was being a student at Peabody
Conservatory. I was conctracted a lot of gigs (sounds like a virus)
for fellow students. I was known as the guy to contact for the big
gigs (corporate events that wanted small chamber orchestras, etc.).
I also did my share of wedding gigs with lots of stories (like how I
almost came to blows with a drunk groom who was harassing our female
quartet members) etc.
Things have flip-flopped a bit since
leaving the southern part of the Mason-Dixon line. (is Baltimore
south of it?) I got into computer work in 1997 and it's really taken
off. I am now a full-time Systems Admin in a really cool software
company. Ironically, now that I'm doing full time computer stuff,
I'm practicing more and giving more concerts! As much as I enjoyed
playing great orchestral music with good musicians, my heart has
always been in solo and chamber music rep. It's great to give
concerts and not worry about my livelihood while I'm playing (who
needs that kind of pressure?). I get to choose what I want to play
and practice too, wohooo! Still, there's a price to pay (getting
less than 6 hours of sleep each nite) and being dead tired at the
end of the day only to realize I still have to practice. But I like
working with networks and computers. We get to play with all the
hottest new techie toys!
I'm also working on developing a
concert series at my church. We really need something like this here
ins the burbs that I live in. There's plenty to keep me busy.
